Disappointed with Merlin

ok after a week of trying out Merlin WRT I’m rolling back to the Asus firmware. The guest network stuff is just too flaky. Sometimes accepts connections , sometimes doesn’t—based on its mood I expect.

Funny, the vast majority of us say the opposite.

If it wasn’t for the Merlin version with all it’s extensions and addons - I would be looking at other routers.

As long as Merlin is doing his magic and the numerous individuals contributing great code - I’m sticking with Asus.

Guest network code is 100% identical to stock firmware, I haven't made any change to it, or to wifi connectivity.

You likely will experience the same on stock firmware since, as RMerlin explained, there is little to no change in the guest network code.
Rather than rant about leaving Merlin, why not post more information about your specific issue. Include your router model, firmware version, guest network clients which are having issues and what troubleshooting steps you have tried.

Some of us went to Asus-Merlin firmware precisely because we could gain access to certain guest network scripting access (YazFi) not available on stock Asus firmware. Heck even rolled back to Merlin from stock Asus 3006.102.x firmware because I didn't like the limitations and clunkyness of Asus's Guest Network Pro settings on a RT-AX86U Pro. To each their own, YMMV and all that.

Otherwise, good luck on stock and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Post a screen shot of your guest network settings and your general wireless settings so others can review to see if anything should be changed. Redact any sensitive information like passwords if visible.

Do you have other devices other than your phone you can test with?

Does the issue persist if you turn off QoS?

What other settings have you changed from default on the router?

Are you running any add-on scripts (like YazFi for guest networks)?

What does the router log indicate around the time you try to connect wifi clients to guest network #2?

Unfortunately I can't expect the renter to have to go back and forth between various trials of settings and router going offline.

Then time to hire an IT professional/MSP and use commercial gear.

I'm sure you probably did this but just curious if you factory reset the router after going from stock fw to asuswrt-merlin fw and setup from scratch?

Before you set up / deploy something to a customer/tenant/etc, you need to test and validate it works as intended first. Just something to think about.

Way to go giving grief to a guy that puts thousands of hours into FW that works well for no charge

Check your DHCP setting. Do you allocate enough IP addresses for guest network, and set the lease time as short as possible to reclaim back the IP addresses in the pool.

The original thread makes for interesting reading, I'd be pretty sure you're going to have the same issues in stock FW though.

I get what you're saying and trying to do, Music/audio uses very little bandwidth, I set up a radio station with their online streaming, on a much slower connection than yours and even without limiting or shaping they never had any problems. Still, I do understand what you're getting at here, and that even on big pipes you still want to reserve a little.
