I’m sure this is just user error, but I have no networking experience, and cannot figure out how to get things working. Diversion says it’s operating properly, but no ads are being logged as blocked. I’m assuming none of my traffic is being routed properly through Diversion, but I haven’t the faintest clue how to do that. Primary goal is ad blocking on my Roku. Specifically for YouTube and Amazon. I understand that YouTube is a unique challenge to block ads on, but an older post suggested there was an experimental setting to handle it. Any help appreciated!

Diversion may be blocking without you noticing. In Diversion enter command ac to update the ad counter. If it counted ads then perhaps all is well.
Report back.
Also, there's the f option, enter f into Diversion and select Unfiltered log. Then do some browsing on the web. It will log Dnsmasq queries. Red lines are blocked domains.

The experimental YT VIDEO ads blocking feature has been removed from Diversion since version 5.0, it never worked and never will in a DNS-based ad-blocker like Diversion is.

Specifically for YouTube and Amazon.

You need different type of ad-blocking solution running on the end point device like browser extension uBlock Origin. Nothing else will block YouTube ads and there is a constant cat and mouse chasing game between Google/Amazon and uBlock-type ad-blockers. So not guaranteed to work forever anyway.

If you turn off the router, I guarantee you will block something... jk 😆 I think @Tech9 and @thelonelycoder have solved this one. Check out what OISD says about this....

There is an entire list of articles that talk about this topic in OISD FAQ section.

He even goes out of his way to provide several list maintainers who claim their lists block these types of ads.

Here are some solutions:

Code:
Alternatives:
- Use your browser, with add-on adblocker like uBlock Origin (Desktop, mobile)
- Newpipe (Android)
- ReVanced (Android)
- https://kb.adguard.com/en/android/solving-problems/youtube-ads (Android)
- Youtube Premium.

Sorry to say but for your Roku, there is no way to block YouTube ads (at least leveraging the official YouTube app). You are also not going to be successful in blocking ads for Amazon. The only app the I know you can block ads on is Peacock. (I was able to watch Yellowstone w/o any ads ever). I have no idea why they call a separate domain for ads but they do and I have them blocked all the time. I use AdGuardHome but it should be the same with Diversion.

To block ad on Youtube, get a Google Chromecast TV and install SmartTubeNext

If you have a Android based set top box or tv you could use free Smarttube box and change settings to your ling for complete no adds. i use the beta release as it has constant updates and addons.this works the best . its your choice
For chrome extension you could use Adblock for Youtube

Can confirm it is blocking ads, however, my sole reason for setting up Diversion was to block ads on the Roku, which I was led to believe was possible. Guess I’ll have to look into an android based box. Any recommendations? Thanks for the replies!

Diversion really not block ads. After I upgrade to 5.0.3 version, all google and another ads come on PC, Android, etc. Not on youtube, we use at home yt premium. Browser doesn't matter.

I block ads by routing youtube through russia for the moment due to the war going on they suspended adsense there.
For this i use Controld DNS
