New Around Here
I bought DNS323 D link NAS. Due to my budget first I put single hard disk 500gb Seagate. After 2 months I bought another new hard disk (500GB Seagate) to add to make Raid 0. I already have data in my Hard disk 1. When I put the new Hard disk in slot 2. The program said, it will format new hard disk(s).
The program doesn't say it will format only new hard disk 2.
I was afraid it will erase all my data in hard disk 1. So I email to D link support and ask. The support said, it will format both hard disk. I have to back up my data from old hard disk 1. So I have to move the data to another 3rd Hard disk) and put the new hard disk. Then the DNS323 format hard disk. (I think it format only new). But i don’t know whether it format both or not as I did not leave some file in Hard disk 1. (I should have done this).

My question is, now I am using the Raid 0, and running both hard disk in DNS323. Hoping that one hard disk fail I can use another as backup. But if one hard disk fail, and I remove the failed hard disk, and buy a new hard disk to replace the defect one. Then it will ask again to back up both hard disk, so I need another (3rd Hard disk to move the data) while the DNS323 is formatting both hard disk.
Is there any way to instruct the DNS 323 to format only the newly replace hard disk.
Thank you in anticipation.

Mr. Claykin, Thank you for the advise. Apologize my error, I make it array Raid 1 (to mirror copy the Disk 1 to Disk 2). I want to know is it true that every time insert new drive DNS323 will format both drive. (I am afraid I don't want to loose my data from my old drive)

Raid 1

Hi!

And I would not recommend Raid 1, either. :)
There are several posts on several froums discussing this, search for that.

Better solution is maybe to have a script (rsync?) to clone your drive A to drive B every night.
Raid 1 protects against disk failure, not SW failure. The latter will occur more frequent, and in that case, a Raid 1 has no protection, either. If the loss of one days work is not too big, I would recommend the rsync solution against Raid 1.

I used to have Raid 1 config on DNS-323 and I almost lost my 1TB data. I had luck, and with some weeks of work (e2fsck, and some more tricks), I could restore everything. I could have spare this with a backup.

The most correct solution would be: use Raid 1 with fw 1.08 (ext3 support) _and_ backup everything on an external drive as well, daily incremental, and weekly full.

Cheers!

Before you go any further I recommend you read this. Learn about RAID, in particular RAID 0 that you plan to use. And BTW, I would NOT recommend using RAID 0. The risks are too high for volume loss.
