I'm using the openvpn client on Merlin firmware, but i'm having some trouble with dns not being able to resolve hostnames.

What happens is, if i restart the router, just using my regular internet connection, everything is fine.
If i activate the openvpn client, it's still fine. BUT. If i turn off the client (i.e. to change some settings in the client setup) and turn it on again, i get an error:

openvpn[1205]: RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address: some-internet-address.com: Name or service not known

I have to reboot the router to get it working again.
If i switch the hostname with an IP address in the client setup, it works, but then my ip address is no longer dynamic which i prefer..

In the "WAN DNS Setting" - it doesn't matter if i set it to connect automatically, or specify my isp's dns servers/opendns, i get same results.

I got a feeling there's an easy solution to this, but i'm just not seeing it..

In the WAN section I specify the DNS I want (google public or openNIC or something) then in the openvpn client I switch to disabled the option "accept DNS configuration".

with this setup, even when connected to VPN you will use google public or whatever you insert in the WAN section.

I have seen the problems you are having plenty. It can be frustrating when you do want to use your VPN's DNS. If that is what you want, I don't have a solution to fix the problem.

It just seems odd, that disabling the client doesn't revert the dns settings (or whatever it is that causes the resolve problems)

I'm on Windows 8.1 x64, with an Asus RT-AC56U router on latest Merlin FW, wired to a stock Cable modem (a netgear cg3000 which is in bridge mode).

Would this configuration be causing any trouble in regards to the dns resolving?
