Does new Interl D525 Atom processor news have anything to do with QNAP TS-#59+ Models

New Around Here
Hi I just read this article on the site:

Intel Shipping Faster Atoms for NASes
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-news/31234-intel-shipping-faster-atoms-for-nases

Before having read that, I noticed that on the QNAP support site, there are new models listed, including:

...
TS-459 Pro+
TS-559 Pro+
TS-659 Pro+
...

Take a look at the attached image from http://qnap.com/download.asp?pl=1

Is that what we can expect in the + series, the Atom D525?

If so I might just hold off on buying to get my hands on the new models.

Thanks

kswail

I have no direct knowledge. But, given QNAP's rate of product introduction, I would not be surprised to see them use the new Atoms.

DDR3 should improve memory performance and lower power used by Ram. But none of these are bottleneck or problems. The 200Mhz performance different is negligible.

What we need is 32nm Die Shrink of the Atom with much lower price.

I keep thinking Why ARM are not pushing into High Performance NAS.

Minimal performance increase, no change in power on that model, but on the 4 bay comparison, standby power use goes up with the new processor. Plus models will probably cost $100 more over the x59 model is my guess, and probably wouldn't be too far off for them to discontinue the x59 non-plus and only do the x59+ model and drop the price to the original x59 price.

If these new "+" models will have hardware encryption (like this post on the QNAP forum suggests) the performance increase in this area will be anything but minimal ... it will be great!

This could be a fantastic new QNAP feature because without the traditional huge performance penalty of using encryption, the decision to use it or not will be much easier, thus many times resulting in much better performance and safety for your, maybe very sensitive, data on a QNAP NAS (e.g. when it gets stolen)

I only wish I could turn it on on my TS-509 Ultra ...

Anyway, it's great to see that QNAP is keeping up the tradition of leading the pack when it comes to using the latest and fastest hardware.

Well, that would be pretty cool. I don't personally have a need for volume encryption, but I know others like it because they have concerns over physical access to their devices. Although, I suspect that if had an option to do encryption with zero (or < 10% impact on performance, I'd probably use it.

I guess I stand corrected, because it seems that the QNAP support guy from the topic I linked to earlier didn't know what he was talking about, made a mistake or was referring to another new, yet unknown, NAS series but I'm pretty sure that the new "+" models that recently came to market do not feature hardware encryption. :(
