New Around Here
Looking at the photograph, you can see that the console connector is VGA, not "serial console port". Given that it has integrated video card and ATOM CPU, it's not surprising. Please correct the article to avoid confusion.

So what's the point of the VGA port?
Is it so you can plug your Telly into it and use it as a media centre? In which case HDMI would be the way to go.
Is it transgressing into the world of "servers" then ? [Why].

I don't understand what it's for..

Can anyone enlighten me?

Sorry about the error. Corrected.

iugrifma: the VGA port is so you you can have console access by connecting a monitor and USB keyboard/mouse.

Console access ? So we are wondering into the world of "servers" then.
On a piece of equipment meant for the SOHO/Home I cant understand what the point of this is? It surely adds to the production costs.

[I am making an assumption here though, that console access means a black screen with green text and a login prompt, not a http browser (GUI) frontend.]

Every manufacturer has been providing admin/config access via builtin http services for years now. What do Synology know that everyone else doesnt?

thiggins - With your close contact to everything that new, have you see anyone else providing a VGA output on new NAS models like this? [is this a new trend?]

The issue is really root access for tinkerers and folks who want to tweak NAS' Linux innards and add capabilities not in the base product. QNAP and Synology provide root access via SSH on all their NASes (so does WD on its new MyBook Worlds). Providing direct console connection is just a convenience.

I wouldn't say console / root access is a trend. But I do see it on higher-end NASes, especially those aimed at business users.

And yes, QNAP, Synology, Thecus and NETGEAR are out to take market share from server and high-end storage products!

Hi!
so it is true console access then, aimed at the 'modders'. I did have one further thought, it could of been part of integrating the surveillance package into the product. The Synology VS60 has a vga port for plugging a screen in to watch the output from ip cameras [only found that out yesterday while digging].
BUT, whatever it's for, it wont stop me from buying a DS710+ :D
Access to Intel compiled code such as SUNs J2EE SDK has really stunnted the oppertunities these little machines are capable of, IMO.

I cant wait.
