Hello

i am looking at a DS209 for my first NAS. I am re-using one existing drive and a brand new one (same make/model) that are relatively new and compatible with the unit. If I put in the first hard drive (the new one), configure it, and copy all my data to it; can I then put in the second hd and set the raid (mirror) up without losing my data on the second?

Thanks
Dave

Nope. Second disk will be wiped and formatted to EXT3 to be part of the RAID1 array. First disk will be wiped clean as well and formatted by the NAS when inserted. Please do not put a disk with valuable data in the NAS. You'll be disappointed.

You should become a member of the Synology forums and get involved. You'll find plenty of other DS09 users with valuable info.

I'm sorry I meant the first drive(i must have fat fingers), i know the data would be lost on the second hd. I bought a brand new hd that matches my existing drives. I wanted to install, configure, and setup the first drive in the NAS; then copy my data to it; then insert the second (existing) drive and setup the raid 1. What i didn't know was if the DS209 would wipe the first hd when setting up the raid 1. I have looked on their wiki pages and believe I can in fact do it that way.

the existing hd's are in a raid 1 array in my pc (data backed up to ext usb and carbonite). so if it all goes to heck during the process, I should be able to recover.

sorry for the confusion

I'm confused with who's on first and what's on second.....

Just make sure you've got a backup of all data because the NAS will wipe the disk when an unknown disk is inserted.

Hi phizzman,
I've just done what your trying to do and you'll be OK with what you propose. Once you have copied your valuable data across to the NAS from your "old" drive you can install it into the NAS and setup a RAID 1 (mirrored) configuration and "Yes" the old drive will be reconfigured but not the new one (with your data onit). It (the new one) is used as the basis for the raid volume and all the data (shared folders and OS) are synchronised onto the newly inserted drive (your old original harddisk). Job done.
Griffo.
