New Around Here
Hello everybody,

I am in charge of the computers in our company.
One of the bosses bought a Synology DS214 along with two Seagate NAS HDD 2000 GB (ST2000VN000), for he wanted to share files with other users.
Of course, he put the stuff in my hands telling me to install it.
I installed the disks in the NAS (very easy). I installed the Synology Assistant on my computer. The DS214 is perfectly visble. I ran the assistant, choosing the .pat on the CD, giving a password for admin, an IP adress, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server.
That's when the trouble began.
The fisrt pass of installation (Apply network parameters) ends with an error code 5. Of course the installation does'nt go any farther.
I tried it on my PC running Windows 7. I tried it on my ancien PC running XP,
I tried it on a machine running Ubuntu 12.04 SLT. I tried it without anti-virus. I tried it plugged directly to the PC with an ethernet cable (several cables).
I switched off most every daemon.
I suspected then a faulty controler. I sent the NAS back to the seller and got a new one in exchange. Same problem.
I downloaded Seagate's tool to test the disks. They are fine
I downloaded the last version of the Assistant for DS214, the last .pat file.
Error code : 5 again and again.
I posted a request for help on Synology Site. Their answer was what I read already in the FAQ and I tried several times.
Does anybody know what the heck is this error 5 and how I could solve my problem?

Thanks

Hi,
Are you accessing the NAS using assistant? Try directly with your browser giving it's IP address and default port number which is 5000. Looks like can't see the network from NAS. Also did you try to ping the NAS? Also dumb question, did you run ipscan and see the NAS there?

and directly connect a PC to the NAS, off the LAN, to ensure there's no LAN address conflict

I tried connecting directly several times under different OS on different machines.
The thing is the assistant does'nt go as far as giving the NAS an IP address.
Although detected by the assistant (type, mac address, serial number etc...) it is never given the IP address. So no ping nor ipscan gives anything.
Is there a way to force an IP address without using the assistant ?

Of course there needs to be a DHCP server to issue an IP so you can admin and then in admin assign a static IP to the NAS. Catch-22.
I thought the NAS would use a 169.x address if DHCP failed.

Error 5 - I couldn't find that. Did you phone-up Synology support? I've called them or emailed them 2 or 3 times over 2 years and they are responsive.

I filled an Online Help form on Synoly site explaining my problem.
Here is what they answered :

Hi Olivier,

Thank you for the inquiry.

Error code: 5" can be solved by these steps:
1. Make sure Anti-virus software on your PC is removed temporally. Simply disabling it may still cause problem.
2. Directly connect your NAS and compputer with an ethernet cable and try to install. Try another cable if necessary.
3. Make sure you are using the latest version of Synology Assistant and DSM to install.
You may download it from here http://www.synology.com/support/download.php

Hope this could help.

I tried what they adviced several times, on different machines running different systems (Win 7, Win XP, Ubuntu 12.04, Lubuntu 13.04)
There is no way to install an IP address on this NAS.
I think I'll return it to the seller and get a QNAP instead.

Thanks for bothering anyway.
Cheers :)

Hi,
Thanks for the follow-up. Very weird problem indeed. Hope you have better luck with QNAP
box.

Tried the Synology user forum?
And as previously suggested.. CALL synology on the phone. Get past the tier 1 person.

I've read the user forum and not seen this issue.

Done. I sent the DS214 back to where it had been bought. I took a QNAP TS 269 Pro instead. It's 100 euros more expensive but that's peanuts for the company's budget. I got it to work in less than half an hour. This NAS seems to be more for professional use, the Synology DS214 more for personal use. Anyway it works.
Thanks again for the answers.
Cheers :)

Hi,
Thanks for the follow up. Yet bothersome wondering what was the problem with Synology box. Cheers.
