New Around Here
I've decided on purchasing a NAS finally for my HD movie collection as well as the ability to use the surveillance function with an IP camera to monitor a newborn and play area. I would also like to use the photo station and other functions so that my wife's family can have access to baby pictures and videos since they live in the South Eastern US and we live in New England. Mostly this will be accessed by me at home for media streaming onto two WDTV LIve media players and surveillance for the baby. The most we willprobably have accessing the station at one time is 2 WDTV devices and possibly the surveillance being up and running when the baby is sleeping.

So my question is which am I better off going with for these functions...the DS410 or DS411J. I would rather go with the lesser priced one since I'll need to buy the Hard Drives as well...but I don't want to buy the DS411J if it isn't powerful enough for the way I want to use it. I can splurge the extra $100 for the better CPU (Which I believe the DS410 has) and more memory.

Also, will I have any problems if I'll be connecting this NAS to an Airport Extreme base station with WirelessN. I heard sometimes that the Airport Extreme doesn't always play nice with the NAS for certain things. Will it work OK for streaming and the Surveillance and also accessing the surveillance from an Iphone or android phone. I just want to make sure that the Airport Extreme won't cause any problems for my needs.

My current setup will be my IMac connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet (not wirelessly), the WDTV Live connected via ethernet to the Airport Extreme and the NAS connected to the Airport Extreme as well. I'm hoping I can use and wirelsss IP Camera for surveillance instead or hardwiring it since it's upstairs on the other end of the house. If anyone has a recommended IP Camera for me that would work well that would be helpfull as well.

Look forward to hearing from all the pros on this board. This is my first jump into a NAS and I want to make sure I'm getting what I need for it to work.

Thanks guys.

Only certain IP cameras are supported

Wireless, even N, will limit speeds to under what you'd get from a 100 Mbps Ethernet connection. So if you want all the performance you're paying for, use Ethernet.

When you start doing things simultaneously, performance drops off very quickly with all NASes. If you are streaming 1080p HD, you might see problems if you are also recording from IP cams. Depends if you are just taking snapshots periodically or recording live camera streams.

I can't advise on performance differences because I haven't tested either model.

As far as the connection goes...everything will be connected to the ethernet cable for the best speeds. I was hoping to use wireless for the supported IP camera since the camera will be upstairs. I will mainly be using it not to record, but for live views...I may record at times though. I guess I should probably go with the DS410 since I want to be able to stream and use surveillance at the same time. I was hoping that the DS411J would do it. My only issue withe DS410 is I've heard quite a bit of horror stories with it as far as the new DiskStation 3.0 goes (problems using the download station that previously worked fine in DS 2.3, and memory leakage, and volume crashes).

I wanted to also look into loading SABNZBD+ onto the DS 3.0 to use in the Download station as well. This is another reason I was wondering whether the DS410 would be better instead of the DS411J. I figured the better processor and memory would be better in download station for this task, but I keep hearing of problems...I don't know if the 3.0 software is optimized for the newer processors in the 2011 builds....I would get the DS410 if I knew this wouldn't be an issue or it it's only an issue with a few people. Anyone have experience with a DS410 on here to give me some advice?

By the way...thanks Thiggins for your response...I really appreciate it since I'm new to this stuff.

If you are not recording the IP cam, there should be no load on the NAS.
Downloading and streaming simultaneously, though, could glitch your videos.

It's not so much the CPU load as it is head seeking from the simultaneous activities. More memory *might* make a difference *if* Synology is smart about cache use.

Maybe someone who has actually done what you are thinking about doing can better comment. Have you checked the Synology Forums?

Yes...I've posted on the Synology forums, but not getting any response over there unfortunately. After reading a bit more I'm seeing that Surveilance station doesn't really allow you to use many of the Web browser functions on the computer unless you are using Internet Explorer...which is not good considering I use MAC's. I currently am asking about people's experiences using Surveillance Station with MAC's over there as well and haven't gotten a response yet. I guess you can use firefox, but I don't think that even allows a bunch of the functions as well...I mainly would need Live View more than anything...and I would be using and Iphone, IPad or Android Phone in order to view the feed as well.
