I am looking at one of these two routers to replace my BT Homehub. After having looking at the specs, there seems very little difference between these two routers. In fact, the only difference I can spot is that the AC55U has AC1200 enhanced AC performance : 300+867 Mbps, whereas the AC52U has
AC750 complete AC performance : 300+433 Mbps.

Can anyone confirm that these are the only differences? There's very little information online about the AC55U and although it's marginally more expensive to buy from new than the AC52U, for some reason it's going much more cheaply 2nd hand than the AC52U is. Which makes me wonder if I'm missing some other difference between the two?

Here is a product comparison on the Asus website.

As you appear to be in the UK, I strongly recommend against buying an Asus combined modem/router (ie DSL variant). Most Asus modem/routers in the UK, incl the 2 you've mentioned, use the very unstable Mediatek DSL chipset which is known to totally mess your DSL connection, especially on FTTC lines where it has been known to trigger the DLM into banding your line.

If you want to buy a decent all-in-one modem/router then something like the TP Link VR900 or Billion 8800NL are good options priced reasonably. If money is no object then go for the Billion 8900AX, TP Link VR2800 or Netgear D7800.

If you want Asus then DSL-AC88U should be ok too with different broadcom chipset.

Thanks for the heads-up about that. I'll avoid those then, I don't want to create potential problems. I may have to go with my first option of adding a cheap 2nd router simply for the vpn as those routers are a bit out of my price range, even 2nd hand. Thanks for your help!
