I'm upgrading my network and have a Cisco E3000 router and Netgear GS108Tv2 switch on the way. I plan to flash the E3000 with Tomato firmware. My understanding is the gigabit switch in the E3000 doesn't support jumbo frames, but the GS108Tv2 does. The devices I'll be connecting are - [JF] means supports Jumbo frames AFAIK:
-----------------------------------
QNAP TS239ProII NAS: Dual-NICs 2x1000mbps [JF]
Mac Mini 1: 1000mbps [JF]
MacBook Pro: 1000mbps [JF]
-----------------------------------
Mac Mini 2: 100mbps
Linksys SPA-3102 SIP box: 100mbps
-----------------------------------
DLink ADSL modem in bridge mode (connected to E3000 WAN port): 100mbps
-----------------------------------
What is the best way to set this up to obtain the speed benefits of jumbo-frames, while not running into any problems. I read the SNB article on jumbo frames and it would appear I have two choices:
1. Connect the 100mbps devices directly to the E3000, and the 1000mbps JF devices to the GS108Tv2. This would appear to be the simplest solution in one way, but on the other it lacks the "cleanliness" and flexibility of having everything connected to the switch. A bit similar to the diagram here but without the second switch.
2. Connecting all the devices to the GS108Tv2 but creating separate JF and non-JF VLANs using 802.1q or port-based, similar to the diagram here. I do need all devices to be able to talk to each other. However in the article it states "In addition, you'll need a router that supports 802.1q tagging or port based VLANs". I'm not sure if Tomato does support this, or if it does, it's not easy to setup.
Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks....
