Right now my wrt54gl is the gateway to the internet and dhcp... I never transferred everything to the 610N because it didn't seem stable unless I could keep it cool and it didn't have dd-wrt at the time.

from the router charts I'm guessing using the wndr3700 as the gateway will make a world of difference than wrt54GL... I also want to set up a VPN server.

I put my wrt54+ddwrt back as the main gateway, because of some issues with the 3700.

You cant use 3700 as vpn server, and it has port mapping issues. I've not been impressed with its stability either.

There has just in the last couple weeks been some releases of ddwrt for the 3700 but they are alpha and reportedly have some wifi issues in comparison to the stock.

funny how after I buy it I see all these other posts coming up about how they're not happy or expected performance is not quite there... :)

I haven't had time to set up my wndr3700

D-Link, Business Class? Not. High end residential, low end SOHO.

Enterprise WiFi... dominated by
Cisco
Aruba
Trapeze
Tropos

HP ProCurve! Sonicwall.
DLink actually has some decent business class gear. Enterprise...maybe not..but at least the "business class" category which includes SMB market..yes.

No, I wouldn't put DD-WRT in the good SOHO, nor enterprise product class.

Don't knock it....with DD...or my preferred Tomato firmware..you can take an el cheapo 65 dollar Linky wrt box and give it some substantially increased stability. About 2 years ago I had to do a budget job at a nursing home with tight purse strings. I needed to blanket quite a large area of their sprawling multi floor building with wireless...would have been around 10 grand to start with traditional true business grade gear. They flat out could not do that...they could barely muster 2 grand. I needed approx a dozen APs. I snagged 1 dozen Linksys wrt54gl units, PoE injectors, extended hi gain rubber duck antennas, flashed them with DD...and put them in running in access point mode. That was 2 years ago. I replaced one PoE injector...they had an electrical issue in one of the storage closets where the electrical source was which cooked one. Else...they've been rock solid..haven't rebooted any, and a dozen roaming laptops using them 24x7. Came in well under budget.

Yes they're no Cisco or HP or <insert your fave fanboy enterprise brand here> ....but they can do fine in light to medium jobs...the SOHO class, and even step into SMB.

wow and I thought enterprise would be better range, reliability, robustness...

Interesting about dd-wrt comment not being good for N network, especially 5ghz, I use that band.

Well..in my experience...it usually is substantially more reliable and robust. I've seen plenty of times situations in business networks where home grade hardware crumbled under the pressure, and business grade hardware performed wonderfully. Usually this is evident under heavy loads, and/or with a high number of wireless clients.

And re: DD and N wireless...I ran DD on a wrt150n box for a long time, ran great.

DD-WRT on WRT310N will run perfect. But not all of them. If you got it to work on WRT150n great or is that WRT160N. On my Buffalo Smart Router has switchable ports and with DD-WRT the WAN port can be use as a 5 switch port. Which is the one I use. I can also change the port speed for all 5 ports. I just set them to the max for AP usage in 802.11g. Has VLAN support also. I wish others would follow the same. They could you know. I guess they figure most home users won't need such features.

If you can get the modem that comes into the WAN and set that port to the max (which it is I am told) router set that port to the max and and all switchable ports on the router too and then use manage switches and set those to the max and all wireless AP set the wireless transmitter from the default on most are 45mW. We should be able to adjust the amp so that coverage ratio out weighs the interfere.

It's time to make these cheap wireless n routers use ATOM 1 core 2 thread and 1GB of RAM along with SDHC slot for all purpose usage. Metal case with dual fan (intake outtake).
