I have an external HD plugged into my Synology DS1513+ via USB3. It has been detected and mounted as a Shared Folder within DSM5. I see no option to set it as encrypted, like I have done with other Shared Folders stored on my internal drives/volume. Is there a way to manually encrypt the external HD Shared Folder via command line or something?

TL;DR

External HD via USB3: Shared Folder -> Encrypted Shared Folder?

I use this freeware for a virtual disk as a file. Put on any media. Easy-open/close. Non-free pro version not needed.

I would NOT use encryption managed by NAS. Too much can go wrong - when you need to decrypt/access and NAS is broken.

I really would like to find a solution that doesn't require any third party software. It doesn't need to be that secure. Just encrypted so that if a burglar breaks in and steals the NAS then they won't have any important documents and pictures.

Plus it is my understanding that should the NAS die, recovering data is pretty simple. Just mount drive with linux and all the data is accessible. Decrypting the encrypted shared folders is possible using encryptfs and a few terminal commands.

Any other ideas? :)

Nevermind it's not a big deal and I can't be bothered stuffing around any longer trying to figure this out :) Will just use it as unencrypted drive and perhaps manually/periodically transfer receipts and bills and important personal docs into an encrypted dmg or virtual disk with that software safehouse software you mentioned. My hope was only to use the Synology Encryption because it is always mounted until reboot (ie. burglar running off with the NAS) and you can access with webdav through iPhone, which couldn't otherwise mount an encrypted dmg or safehouse disk.

If anybody figures it out, let us all know.

Also one last question. I remember reading somewhere that it is better to format your drives to ext4 using linux, rather than the built in Synology option. Is that right?

Synology uses EXT4, in my NAS. I can read it with MS Windows and freeware.

I urge you to store anything sensitive in an encrypted virtual drive. Theft of computer gear is not rare. That's why I use SafeHouse Software. Easy. Quick. Safe.
