It can also be done by holding down the reset button on the router for 5 seconds.....But if you hold it to long (like 10-15 seconds) you will put it in restore mode (which you will need to use the rescue disc program to reflash)

You dont need the disk in Recovery Mode, just launch your browser to 192.168.1.1 like normal and you can Clear NVRAM(Factory Reset), Upload Firmware and Reboot the router. The only time you would need the disk/tool is if you brick it or cant get to the normal or mini recovery mode webgui. I dont think that just holding the reset button in by itself will put you into Recovery Mode, I have never tried it though.

Everyone should learn how to use Recovery Mode so you are familiar with its operations before you need to learn it on the fly. Recovery Mode: Power Off, Hold in the Reset Button and hit the Power Button and hold the Reset Button till the power led starts flashing, open the webgui.

Know your hardware buttons

Reset button: pressing the Reset button while power-up, will put this ASUS router in recovery mode.

That is: press and hold the reset button, keep pressing the reset button while plugging in the power, then keep holding the reset button pressed for about ten seconds until the power led is blinking slowly, then release the reset button. The router is now in recovery mode.

WPS button: pressing the Red WPS button while power-up, will clear the NVRAM. All settings are stored in NVRAM of this ASUS router. Clearing the NVRAM is the most efficient way to reset the router to default settings.

That is: press and hold the WPS button, keep pressing the WPS button while plugging in the power, then keep holding the WPS button pressed for about ten seconds, then release the WPS button. All settings have now been wiped, and default settings will be used.

Information sources are not identical, here it is from the "latest" RT-N66U manual dated 2011.12.22, which is correct to my experience:

Page 47:
To launch the rescue mode and use the Firmware Restoration utility:
  1. Unplug the wireless router from the power source.
  2. Hold the Reset button at the rear panel and simultaneously re-plug the wireless router into the power source. release the Reset button when the Power LED at the front panel flashes slowly, which indicates that the wireless router is in the rescue mode.

How to restore the system to its default settings?
  • Page 41: Advanced Settings>Administration>Restore/Save/Upload>Factory default: Restore
  • Page 51: Press the Reset button at the rear panel of the wireless router for more than five seconds.
