New Around Here
I posted this a while ago over at the syno forum but they tend to be not super interested in responding so I figured I would try over here.

I have a DS411+ with the most recent version of DSM. I have noticed that when I browse my video files with an apple device (ipad/ipod touch) I can stream compatible files from the browser through file station.

However when I access file station through my phone (android) or laptop (windows) no such luck. Just wants to copy the files to said device. Anyone with any thoughts?

Just thought it would be sweet to be able to stream natively to any device without having to run media servers or whatever.

thanks

It's a common misconception that the media servers DLNA / UPnP AV "stream". What they primarily do is allow devices that don't support network browsing to find network shares and list files via a different mechanism.

Once your device finds the files, it's the OS / app on the device that determines what can be done with the file.

So your devices don't have a proper handler for the file and the only thing they can do is offer to download it.

The problem is I am not running a media server. This is just accessing the files through the web portal file station. Works for mp4 files on iOS devices but won't work for avi files on my xp net book. And I can play those files if I put them on the net book and don't access them through the server.

My answer is still the same. The issue is on the player end, not the NAS.
