What happened to the firmware file in either the Asuswrt of the Merlin release
for the RT-AX86U Pro? I unzip the main file and I get a PKGTB file but no .w file.
Tried a number of releases and no .w firmware. Also same for the latest Merlin
release for RT-AX66U PRO.

Thanks in advance

Do you actually have the Pro model or are these just standard RT-AX86U/RT-AX66U?

There is no RT-AX66U Pro model. Perhaps RT-AX88U Pro?

So the file I actual upload is the PKGTB file? Huh, everything I've seen or read says that I should be using a .w file. I certainly don't want to brick the router and take down the world here.

Look at your stock Asuswrt firmware. What file do you see there?

Who said AX66U ?

You, in your first post. What's the model you need firmware for?

RT-AX86U Pro or RT-AX88U Pro?

Make sure you download the correct firmware.

There is nothing wrong with the Asus-Merlin firmware file for the RT-AX86U Pro. The current extracted Asus-Merlin firmware file is: RT-AX86U_PRO_3004_388.6_2_nand_squashfs.pkgtb

Worked perfectly fine on my RT-AX86U Pro.

SDK 5/6/7 platform used .trx files. HND 5.02 used .w files. HND 5.04 uses .pkgtb files. This is platform-specific.

And firmware ending .w for non-pro

I do have the RT-AX86U PRO

See the explanation above. You perhaps have a brand new router and never updated the firmware on it yet.

You are correct. New Router and have never used a .pkgtb file to upload. I'll try that after the users logoff for the day. And pray that all works. Thank you for your response.

Is there any way to extract the rom file/the binary (what you can flash on the nand chip) from the .pkgtb or .trx or .w files?
I know that Asus are using an encapsulation on their motherboard bios files, i can deal with that with the UEFITool, but asuswrt is a totally different cake to bake.
Sorry for waking up an old thread again... but both the snb search and google popped up this one.
