Firmware for RT-N16

Hi

I'm shopping for a new router and the RT-N16 is my choice for the moment.
I will use it in pure router mode (no wireless). Speed and stability are important.
However, I'd really love to have the following features, ordered by importance:

1. port-fowarding: forward port 22 connection to my Linux pc
2. dnsmasq: basically assigning static IP and dns name to dhcp clients.
3. dynamic dns with freedns.afraid.org: dyndns is no longer free, and no-ip sux
4. custom banned list: I banned my nephews's ipods/ipads to encourage them to play with each other instead of sitting in a corner and play with their iDevices.

My question is: Can I have those features with the OEM Asus firmware or Asuswrt-Merlin? Or do I have to go to Tomato/dd-wrt/openwrt ?

With the help of the search function on this forum you'll find all the answers you need.
Port forwarding can be done, manually assign IPs is built in, ddns is built in and a custom banned list can also be done.

For freedns you will have to update it through DNS-o-Matic, as it's not supported out of the box by the firmware.

I tried, cut&paste my username/password for dns-o-matic into merlin, but it keeps getting this error:

May 15 16:18:13 ddns update: ez-ipupdate: starting...
May 15 16:18:14 ddns update: connected to updates.dnsomatic.com (67.x.x.x) on port 80.
May 15 16:18:14 ddns update: [b]authentication failure[/b] (67.x.x.x) on port 80.

Is there a "wan-ip-up" script, so I add a call to freedns directly? something like

wget freedns.afraid.org/dynamic/update.php?.....

it took some play for me to get dnsomatic right when i configured no-ip.com for it, iirc they have a 'name' field that i thought was just to label the service, but actually required the full ddns to work.

or you could use /jffs/scripts/wan-start

look at the asuswrt-merlin wiki for available scripts and config overrides

thank you, wan-start seems to work... I'll wait until tomorrow and test it again.

use asus dns

You can also use the ASUS free dns accompanied within your RT-N16 router:

YourName.asuscomm.com

The alternate to get freedns working without DNS-o-Matic
is to use the Asus dns service, and then create a CNAME in your freedns console to map your domain/subdomain to the Asus dns name [myasusdnsname].asuscomm.com
