First NAS setup advice.

I’m making my first attempt at setting a home NAS network and I found this fine website. Before I go spending money I’m looking for a bit of advice.

The setup I’m planning to go with is as follows.

Equipment I already own
• Philips LED TV Full HD 1080p
• 2 Wireless Laptops
• 1 Wired PC.
• PS3
• Linksys WAG354G
• dLAN Highspeed adapters 85 Mbps home plug.

Equipment I’m planning to buy
• Synology DiskStation DS411j 4-Bay NAS Enclosure
• 2 2TB AV-GP SATA-300 7200rpm 32mb
• Netgear 5-Port 10/100 Switch

I’m going to connect the TV, NAS box, & PS3 to the switch and connect the switch to the home plug. The NAS box will be used mainly for streaming vids and data storage

My questions are
Do you think I will be able to stream HD video with this setup? Considering the NAS box and TV will be on the same Switch/home plug, also the TV has media player software so I don’t need to use the PS3 as the media player.

Should I not buy or replace any of the above equipment.

Is there any other way of connecting the NAS box to the TV? My TV has USB but the USB port on the NAS box is host only.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

What is the powerline connection for? If the streaming source (NAS) and the player are on the switch, you should be fine. If you are planning to stream HD via 85 Mbps powerline, you won't be happy. You need 200 Mbps HomePlug AV powerline for a chance at HD streaming.

I’m using the powerline to connect all the devices to the internet as the phoneline/router is in a different room.

Now this is where it gets a bit confusing for me, the NAS and TV will be on the switch but the switch will be connected to the powerline which will be connected to the router. I’m not sure if the streaming packets will run form the NAS directly to the TV or will the packets need to pass through the router first and therefore passing though the powerline thus slowing down the network speed.

Hope that makes some sense.

A router handles traffic to and from the Internet only. Data between devices connected to the switch will stay on the switch.

Sweet, streaming full HD should be a painless enough. I think I will go ahead buy the equipment and see how it all goes, unless there is any reason you could give me not too.
