Oct 1, Microsoft's PREVIEW.MICROSOFT website opens up volunteers to download the next version of Windows after 8.0 and 8.1.

Windows 10.

Yes.

Microsoft was apparently so ashamed of 8.0 and 8.1 that flushing it down the toilet wasn't good enough.

"Pull the handle one more time. We want to make sure it can't climb back up."

There were many who thought a few more tugs might have done an even better job.

"What's wrong with 14? I mean, we're gonna hit it sooner or later - why not bite the bullet and start with 14?"

There was a chorus of protests, with many folks citing their star-charts favored "28" and "17" instead.

So now, the race for Highest Versioning Number hits OS's. Chrome, better watch out!

The real reason was Win 95 and 98...

The, uh, "opportunities" for updates to Win 9.0 could have avalanched toward Win 9.5.

Gee. That's real confidence.

"Yes, we're now far-sighted! We realized 3 or 4 updates likely won't be good enough, and we've had enough trouble getting folks off of XP. We sure don't want to start up Win95, 98 and that whole ME mess."

I must one of the few people that like windows 8.1. I don't really understand why people hate it. I assume it's because they aren't comfortable with anything new.

I've purchased two new 8.1 home systems this year (2014) with Intel i5's. Got great deals on both probably due to windows 8, but I am enjoying the windfall.

I upgraded my neighbors' xp machine to windows 7 last month, and realized how much I like windows 8.1 after the win 7 install.

So we assume you'll be the first one in line for Win 10.

I'm not an early adopter. I'm still running wireless N. I'm already 2.5 years late to AC.

I'm not really in a hurry to update anything......except I do have the SSD itch that I'm currently fighting off.

If windows 10 is free (for win 8 users) and adds 2-3 years to my current windows 8 end of life, I'll be all over it......next fall. If it's not fee, then that's ok too. Windows 8.1 is a pretty good OS, IMO.

I have been using windows 8 and 8.1 on both my original surface pro and now an additional surface pro 3. Never had issues expect the battery of the original surface pro seems short with only 4 to 5 hours of run time vs. the surface pro 3. Since I take a lot of notes with OneNote using the stylus this is a great OS paired with the hardware.

I agree that folks are so adverse to change. Even when Apple changed their iOS to be flatter with Easter egg colors people complained but eventually adopted.

I think the "adverse to change in OS" couldn't be a bigger lie. That's all it is - a lie. No one has stayed with one OS, and no one will.

What the real argument is: "Will I be more or less productive?" Why should anyone who is productive change to LESS productive? That's the real issue. The training costs, the administrative costs are all higher and are completely anti-productive costs. (Of course, for folks who aren't productive, fine - "Oooh - look at the pretty colors!! This thing spins and hops on picnic tables, too!!")

I can only wonder why some folks don't install their Dream OS on a parent's computer when given the chance. That says a lot. It's a training issue. It's an expense issue. It's a productivity issue. "Adverse to change" - what a crock.

By the way, it looks like Win9 IS going to be free. I think it's available today, too. For free. Forever!

I *just* finished a hardware refresh here with HP pro elite 800's with I7's small form factors, dual nvidia cards and dual monitors, 100+ machines, I used Win7/64. Reason, call center, warehouse, packing stations, shipping stations. The retraining would be disruptive. It is going to be bad enough when we go from office03,07 to 13 as it is.

I've got two PCs up and running on the new "Win 10"-thingy now. One's an older i3 (Z77 chipset, NVidia video card) and the other is a newish AM3-FX (990FX, with Radeon card). I'll be installing critical programs this morning to see if they load, see if they function and see if I can save a file! Er, and then retrieve it, too. Ethernet LAN works. That's a blessing. Video is the Install's setting - I probably won't twink with that unless I want to risk a crash and wipe-out. Keyboards & mice are PS/2 on one, USB on the other. I should probably mix and match later on to see how "detection of switch" is handled.

USB memory sticks are detected, too. Nice.

I do!

My mom (she's 70!) told me the other day that her old Windows computer (I think it was runnings XP) no longer started. Since she only uses the computer for web browsing and Skype, and got an iPad for birthday present in january, my take was "I'll install xubuntu for you". Going from XP to xubuntu can't be harder than going from XP to iOS:)

Unfortunately the machine didn't boot from my USB stick so I'll have do burn a disc (though I think the machine only has a CD ROM and I don't think xubuntu installer fits on a CD).

I did the same thing on my better halfs laptop (an old netbook) last year and it was like "Wow!". Ten times faster than with Windows. It still can boot Windows (I made it dual boot), but she hasn't missed a thing. But then she mainly uses the browser too.

But really, I can't say xubuntu is my dream OS, I use quite a mix and my laptop still runs Win7 (mostly due to game requirements).

A laptop that my son had died so I donated a T43 thinkpad w/docking station with a fresh install of ubuntu for him to use. He griped 'it's not windows' and moped for a day or two, have not heard a peep from him in almost two months. Thats also been true around the neighborhood, lot of neighbors got tired of their kids and grand kids hosing their xp n vista machines so I've been installing ubuntu and open office for a few years now. I'd push it here if there was an outlook alternative that handled exchange, it would double the time needed for a hardware refresh.

I've done the same - if folks don't have any needed services other than web browser or writing their memoirs, viewing pix or playing arcade games, Linux is a great breath of fresh-air. And it's no more difficult for them to transition into that OS as it is the Start Screen system. Plus they get real windows multi-apps-running capability. For free.

But for folks that still have productive, needed programs with no Linux (or Win7-8 - cough cough Nero) equivalents, then their OS choice is tied to their productivity. And truly - no need to use a shiny new tool that isn't very good when the old one is perfect.

A hardware refresh in 2014 isn't the same as it was in 2005. I paid $1700 for a similiar spec to a t-43 Dothan 1.73 w/ x300 graphics that can't even handle 720p.

You can buy the laptop below for $200 on sale and it will run circles around a 2005 laptop. You'll get 720p on YouTube, be able to browse the Internet, use word, outlook and you get a modern OS on a UEFI rig. $200-$250 usually won't break the bank.

The biggest drawback to the older rigs is not being able to watch video (decently).

I had a different neighbor call me a couple weeks ago frantic that she couldn't open a very important word document and her computer was freezing. To make a long story short, I ran chkdsk on her windows 7 rig and it fixed it.

She had no idea what I did of course. But I was thinking to myself at the time, ....if only you had windows 8 instead of windows 7, it would have run in the background while you slept and I wouldn't have had to spend time working on your computer.....and she wouldn't have had the stress of it all. ;)

JL, not run videos? I have a Dell Lat running Win98-SE that plays every DVD thrown at it. With an 8k video chipset. It plays those videos perfectly.

But if you want to start a Win8 campaign thread, please do so and I'll join in. This thread was pointing out how MICROSOFT was selecting a new name that distanced itself not from its ordinary sequence from your most favorite OS.

Make your own Why Do Folks Rag On Win8, and I'll give you two years of very specific reasons.

DVDs? The modern WWW browsing experience doesn't really place a heavy emphasis on DVDs.

I'll stay on topic and give you an answer to your question. I found the answer by using a windows 8.1 computer.....!! Google probably doesn't work on your windows 10.

Here ya go.......enjoy.
