Gigabit router vs gigabit switch

Checking out the router charts, it seems that different routers have different throughputs.

Would it be better to get a 100mbps router instead of a gigabit one and just connect a separate gigabit switch to one of the routers port?

Do these dedicated gigabit switches have different throughputs as well? I'm looking at the Dlink 5 port gigabit switch to be connected to a cheap 10/100 Wireless router.

You certainly can do that unless your Internet connection is > 100 Mbps.

Buy your switch on price, warranty and brand preference. There are no significant performance differences among unmanaged low port count switches.

GigE switch (consumer)
Linksys as of a year ago. Too hot. Failed in 30 days. To landfill.
D-Link: same. Too hot. Electrolytic caps bulged. To landfill.
Netgear (too large) - runs fine.

Fry's store brand (recent) - have two, running fine after a couple of months. Low cost. Small.
