Gigabit Speed cut in half with QOS

Frobozz

New Around Here
I just upgraded to Comcast gigabit and I know I am suppose to get somewhere around 930-940 with a wired connection. In testing I only got about 480-540 so I was going to take my Router out to troubleshoot but decided to turn off QOS first. I only had the bandwidth limiter QOS set for one device and that was all so I didn't figure it was that but when I turned it off I got 938 download . I tested it back and forth and that was for sure causing the slowdown. I guess I wonder if its broken of if I need some education on how it works? Maybe a hard reset?

Try Adaptive QOS. Set upload and download to 95% of your rated speed. With Merlin try each of the three QOS modes to see which works best for you.

I did a reset (initialize) of the router and turned on adaptive QOS and set it to 800 dn and I got 781 dn when testing .. so thats is working. I next set it to 1000 dn and I got 927. So adaptive QOS works and so does traditional but the option for "bandwidth limiter" from the start cuts at least all wired connections down to around 500 before I even specify a device to limit.

The reason I am using the limiter is that I have a NAS that uploads a backup to the cloud at night and I have limited upload so I just wanted that to throttle a bit.

To the OP I did a hard reset, tried all the QOS features, and also did 95% of BW. No matter what it cuts my speeds in half, I get about 975 down and up, with QOS I get 575 down and up. I have the RT-AC3100 use the basic features and run Merlin's FW. Dont know what it can be but I have been running with out QOS for a few days now and have not seen any issues. I have a house full of gamer's so figured QOS would help but with the BW that I have I think I am good with out it. I have At&t gigabit Fiber service, I use to have spectrum 300 down and 20 up, for some odd reason QOS would work with spectrum. I would get higher download and up load speeds, 375 down and 28 down? It could be something to do with the AT&T gateway on my end.

You are lucky cause my upload is around 35-40 mbps even though I have 1000 mbps down . I would love if ISPs would stop playing these games and sell service with no ports blocked and the same upload and download.. They can just charge per GB used or something. I would be ok with that.. but I digress . I have shut off QOS and the scheduled upload I have at like 1am should not be a problem.

OP you are using there Gateway, have you configured it the right way. I know I had to do alot of steps just to get my AC3100 to work correctly. Have you looked up guides on your gate way on how to add a second router? I would assume that you have since you say you have a nas, I just use mine 3100 for basic internet, I have a big house and need the wifi signal to be strong.

I know I turned off alot of the firewall stuff on the at&t gateway and that made everything run better after the regular set up that I had to do.

Op I have been looking at maybe getting a new router but I just think it has something to do with the AT&t gateway. To be honest I think the ac3100 is one of the most Asus stable routers on the market. Never really had issues with it and have always gotten good advice on these forums from the pro's that are always willing to help.

I have a docsis 3.1 Cable modem I just bought for around 160 usd. It is the MB8600 . I also have the Asus AC-8600U that I bought. Add in a couple of managed switches and there is my network.. Not much to it. I am no expert but at this point I am sure the slowdown is with the asus router and its implementation of the QOS bandwidth limiter. I can certainly live without it .. no complaints.. just figured I would post about it and make people aware and get some feedback.

I'm having similar issues with my newly upgraded Cablevision-Optimum Online.. I went from a 200/35 meg service to 400/40 meg. When i go directly to the modem it's 425/55.. but when I put the existing router in place I'm getting 225/44 MAX. I've turned off all of those features including the AI-Protection and still not much better. To be fair I still need to reset the device and manually reconfigure it all. Once i do that i'll update everyone. If you come up with any findings don't be shy! Asus-Merlin - 384.5 - RT-AC88U

Try one of these or all of them.

1. Clear NVRAM.
2. Use MAC clone with your modem MAC address. Or do not use MAC clone(empty that space).
3. Turn off QoS.
