New Around Here
I have an Asus AC87u (2 actually) that I'm having issues with and I don't know whether it's a firmware bug, or some setting I've got turned on.

Asus AC87u w/ 378.55 firmware

I recently upgraded to Gigabit Fiber at home. When I connect to the gigabit WAN port all but one of the switch ports on the router starts auto negotiating at 100mb instead of gigabit. Now if I change the order I plug everything in (plug in all the switch ports first, then the WAN port last) the WAN port will auto-negotiate to 100mb, and leave 2 of the switch ports at 1gb.

My initial thought was a hardware problem, so I swapped out the router with another AC87u (same firmware) and have the exact same issue. I've also tried with different devices and different cabling.

Basically it seems that I can't have more than 2 active 1gb connections to the router at once.

Any ideas?

I would do a reset to factory default and see if that fixes your issues. Always a good idea to do that after a firmware upgrade, so that correct drivers etc, are loaded..

All cables are CAT6. All connections have also been tested with a Fluke, and are capable of working at 1gb. I'm relatively confident it's not cabling at this point.

What happens if the WAN port is unplugged? Do all the LAN ports then negotiate correctly?

You might try putting an unmanaged Gb switch between the fibre and WAN port. That's been know to help these strange situations.

I agree. How about downgrading the firmware and see if the issue goes away..

I'll dig up a switch and try it out.

I agree with John's post. I have also done that and it can fix the WAN port and modem negotiation issue. Hopefully the other ports will negotiate correctly..

Firmware downgrade didn't do it, in fact it made the issue worse. After the firmware downgrade, it wouldn't let me keep more than 2 connections up at once. I went all the way back to Asus stock firmware to test and had the same issue with all the revisions I tested (although since the Asus firmware doesn't have the fancy little tools section, it was a PITA to determine what all the speeds were.

Next up, find an unmanaged switch.

seems like em interference or noisy electrical line
try a different ac circuit and/or wall plug and/or ac adapter and dont use any extension cords/surge protectors

Ok, so an update on this. Finally was able to grab an unmanaged switch and swap out the incoming connection to go through the switch. Magically both ends negotiated 1gb connections. All of sudden all the ports on the switch also operate on gigabit without issue. So, something is happening with the fiber connection that is disabling the gigabit connections on the switch...I have no idea at this point.

Lol, welcome to "Green" switches - just one more thing to try and sort out... managed or unmanaged - sometimes they just get into a state where the "big red button" approach magically fixes things...

Turns out, not so clever as I thought. I called it good because everything was auto negotiating gigabit fine, but never tested the internet. Finally tested the internet, and it was way worse than the 100mb I'm getting without the switch in place.

Sorry for asking the obvious.....but have you tried plugging the connection directly to a client bypassing the router?
