I think this router will be nearly perfect once OpenWrt 24.10.1 is released. I’m running it on 24.10 snapshot to get a mt76 driver update for disconnected STAs not yet in a release version.

Did you use the LuCI "system upgrade" file? (vs "factory image")

First time out of the box upgraded to 4.7.0 and set up basics. Turned on Adguard Home.

Anything special I should download as far as add-ons. Learning curve challenged!

Thanks

Yes, it was very easy to switch from stock to OpenWrt.

I’m using it as an AP with an x86 mini-PC also running OpenWrt 24.10.0. The fewer packages the better:
  • luci-app-sqm (for QoS)
  • luci-app-adblock (like Diversion)
  • luci-app-banip (like Skynet)
I don’t use banip, but I see from your signature you use Skynet.

In AP mode, this doesn't matter...

I've been working on filogic along with ath11k - nothing is perfect for every situation, but MT6000 is pretty good.

Snapshot Builds at the moment are kind of broken on the 2.5GBe realtek phys, and this has been for a couple of weeks.

ath11k has better radios at the moment - all things being equal - but the mt76 is for most, good enough...

There's a big jump from 24.10 to Master for all sorts of driver and firmware updates on the Mediatek Filogic target... Not all of those changes are good - but wireless has seen improvement on mt76, esp over in the g/n/ax space...

Indeed. I am just recommending the minimum packages to our friend here for a router.

So I’ve heard. :)

My Dynalink WRX36 (ipq8072) was shelved after the arp/broadcast/multicast/IPv6 issues from a couple years ago. Waiting for ath11k to do something about this issue.

As I get older, I want to avoid the bleeding edge. I’ve backed away from the pesa builds that got to be too cutting edge (I kept 3 of his original mac80211 patches for AQL/codel), and master is turbulent lately. mt76 seems to get backported to stable often enough for my liking.

Pesa builds actually reverted a change due to the 2.5Gbe bug I found after an EEE check-in back in Mar 5, 2025...

Pesa is a community release on MT6000 - but it's solid - just a fork so bugs there might not be fixed...

That's complicated - ath11k is two platforms (actually, now 3) - ipq80xx is actually the older one, and there QSDK is ARMv7... only recently has ipq80xx has been ported over - QSDK is still ARMv7 for many target running on the "big" IPQ80XX plaform

IP60xx/IPQ50xx are still two different targets on QSDK and OpenWRT QualcommAX...

To be fair enough - qualcommax/ipq60xx seems to be the right place for WiFi6 devices, and most now are focused on the qualcommbe targets for WiFi7

Anyways - because of the US administration policies, might be a good time to pick up either a MT6000 or AX/AXT1800 device due to US tariffs rolling in on April 2nd, 2025...

Looking at things, perhaps that any kind of consumer equipment.
