At present I use tunnel bear to get apps I need as only free apps and not even all of them are available where I live which is v annoying.

Is anyone aware of a way to set something up directly on the router similar to the way unblock us etc can be used for accessing netflix?

I'm running RMerlin firmware.

Cheers

You may be able to avoid geo blocking by running a VPN on your ASUS router.

If you are looking at the easiest and perhaps slickest way to do this consider using ASTRILL. They have an App that self installs on a router running Merlin's firmware and creates a new Astrill VPN tab.

I use Astrill on the router I have my wife connect to as it is possible for her to change the VPN server from the USA, Sweden, UK, etc. and she is a woman who can't turn on the TV and get it working if I left it on an alternative input.

There are other ways that Google and other content providers can use to verify your location so having a VPN won't fool everyone all the time. Try the VPN for a week and see if it does what you need before making a longer commitment.

If you want to take the time you can get a VPN client from most VPN providers running on many routers. You don't have to use OpenVPN. PPTP is fine since you are only concerned about geo blocking and not signal security.

+1 on running Astrill on Merlin's firmware.

Additionally, the router app lets you selectively include or exclude devices running through the tunnel. This means we can leave our ATV & netflix tunneled through a USA server while everything else is routed through our isp normally. This feature alone is worth it's weight in gold imho ;)

I would recommend them unconditionally if I could get higher throughput from their servers. I could not get more than 40 Mbps download speeds from them using my router and accelerator. Using the same hardware I can get 70Mbps using StrongVPN which I use on my main network.

Astrill is for my wife's Ipad on my home network. when traveling I use the Astrill application on my phones, tablets, and laptops.

Interesting. I could not achieve satisfactory streaming on StrongVPN here in New Zealand.

As I'm still on ADSL2+, I can max out my connection with Astrill. We can stream Netflix in HD and superHD without buffering. That and the odd p2p download without any problems.

Hey Skirk..now you have me interested. Can you tell me more about how you do this? I am currently with PIA, who I find quite good as well, but I might be willing to switch if I find Astrill has better performance and options.
Cheers!

Have a look on their website or google the astrill router applet features. It's probably not appropriate for me to link to a commercial site ;)
There's no hacking or tweaking required, it's all there on the applet once installed on the router.

It all sounds great but if you have it on your router you cannot connect from any other device without paying an additional fee.

Would like to hear what Merlin's take on this is. Was he part of the process of creating the applet that can be installed on his firmware?

Personally, I use ibVPN on all my computers. There is freeware and opensource DNLA software too. Maybe this will help the OP?

I have no idea how that applet works.

I was hoping you were involved. Would have given me more confidence. I will give the seven day free trial a shot and go from there. Cheers!
