Hi. I was considering the GT-AC52300. I have a gigabit connection from ATT and will be installing POE cameras. I like that Asus has built in VPN

However, the Google reviews scare me. It seems that this router is finicky and not reliable.

I wonder if it has improved on the latest firmware. Thanks!

Consider reading this thread. There is a lot of information regarding this router there:

It seems people absolutely hate this router then. I really need a stable router that I can set up as a VPN router. Any suggestions? Are nighthawk routers better?

I don't necessarily hate mine :) as it works well with VPN in it but I wished there was a Merlin firmware for it for the all great security and other useful features it offers compared to stock firmware. I have had it for a couple of months now and have not had any major issues. I also have NordVPN installed and it works great. But you may want to do your research and decide what is based on your needs (bandwidth, type and number of devices you planning on having on your network, among others things).

RT-AC86U would be another router to consider especially if you plan on using a VPN. I also have one and it is one of the best performing routers I have ever owned. And you would also be able install Merlin FW in it as well. There are quite a few threads in the forums regarding this router but you could look at this one first:

I don't have any experience with Netgear routers but there is quite a bit of info in the forums about them.

I've had this router for over a year now and never had a problem since I installed Merlin. It's the best router I have ever owned! Very stable on the new versions of Merlin!

I found 384.4_2 to be the best version where they nuked WTFast on the later versions!

I found the people that had issues was due to old patches that were buggy (fist couple years since release). It's all stable now with Merlin!

There is no Merlin for the gt-ac5300.

Were you thinking of RT-AC5300 instead?
