Have some question about Asus RT-AC87R.

I have just bought a used Asus RT-AC87R. I have searched I known RT-AC87R and RT-AC87U are the same.

Can I use Merlin firmware with my Asus RT-AC87R ? (Can not find the RT-AC87R's exact firmware on the Merlin website)
Can I convert RT-AC87R to RT-AC87U ? At the post of Magnetron1.1, its can convert to RT-AC87U.

Fearing to brick my router, I wanted to ask people to be sure.

How to turn an RT-AC87R into an RT-AC87U:
(Used serial port to make change to NVRAM right after first time boot and before making any changes through the web GUI.)
(I did this to show the initial boot-up screen, but the odmpid variable can be modified at any time and using Telnet.)

/ # nvram get odmpid
RT-AC87R

/ # nvram set odmpid=RT-AC87U
/ # nvram commit && reboot

/ # nvram get odmpid
RT-AC87U

BTW, ASUS released new firmware 3.0.0.4.376_2061 yesterday.

That means I can flash Merlin AC87U firmware direct to my AC87R router, right?
