My point is options are available and there is no need to keep the old hardware forever and play with scripts. Low cost SMB APs come with everything needed plus much newer radios with AC Wave 2 and AX support. Zyxel also has low cost models as well as Cisco.
 
Agreed. I just got caught up in the aimesh marketing a couple of years ago when I should have researched better at the time and added APs rather than routers.

I'm really pleased I looked into opnsense/pfsense. I hadn't even thought that it was possible to build my own router / firewall on x86 hardware for a couple of hundred bucks until a few weeks ago.
