New Around Here
Hi
Just got my first Asus router, however I'm stuck !

All LAN ports have been tested : slow download ~0.5 Mbit/s , OK upload ~20 Mbit/s
Speed test of ISP (without AC68U) : download & upload ~35Mbit/s
Wireless connections : slow/weak - (haven't focus on this since i don't get the LAN to work)

Firmware tested :
- First 376_1663 (firmware upgrade during first setup) & tried reset to factory defaults
- Downgraded to 374_5656 : reset to factory defaults, restart of ISP modem, AC68U & PC

Tried the following settings :
Frequency : 2.5 / 5
Wireless Mode : Auto (b/g Protection) / Auto
Channel bandwidth : 20MHz / 40MHz
Control Channel : 11 / 52
Authentication Method : WPA2 Personal

No changes to LAN/WAN/IPv6/ etc

Do you have QoS on?

Can't access my router now!

Should it be be on or off ?
I have not made any changes to the default settings.

Hope for some input, have no idea why I have so slow upload speed

QoS should be off my default or switched off for diagnostics purpose. have you done a hard reset on the router yet?

Yes, I have reset the router, by pushing the "reset" button on the back of the router (10 sec) twice (with both firmware).

Could it be something with the setup of my w8.1 ?
I've used the Viper setup..) or shouldn't this be relevant ? (I wouldn't expect it, since I'm testing out the "hardware" LAN switch function of the router...)

Googling the net, this is the closest I've come to a "similar" (but not the same) description of my problem (in swedish, I used google translate)

Not even worth 1 star but I couldn't choose 0.

The router works fairly if you do not want to use the fast ethernet ports (i.e. only wireless) and do not need any advanced features, because none of them work. The users can probably give this router high marks because they do not really need one like this expensive router.

The list of errors/bugs/problems are long but here are a few examples of problems:
1. When it's connected via wired connection to the routerand starting the Canon software on the computer, the router's wireless network stops to work (!). Incredible ....
2. When connected via wired connection, the router drops inexplicably. Probably bugs in the way the signals are routed.
3. Web interface is slow and buggy. Need to reload the page several times (caused by the same error as above surely).
4. DHCP server does not always work and doesn't give out any IP. Hardcoding the MACIP , I don't the host name of the computer. Only the IP and MAC.
5. Using Huawei 4 g dongle and there are no opportunities to see example connection speed, 3 g/4 g mode, etc. etc. etc. Only the most basic.
6. router IP is always 192.168.1.1 and specify another IP for example 192.168.0.1 it creates only a bridge to 192.168.1.1. Stupid, but seems to work.

Yes, I have changed the LAN cable several times (and I have a computer engineering degree). Using Cat6 cable and Win 8.1. Have upgraded to latest FW and reset the router to factory default a number of times. Also have installed LAN drivers in the computer (not tried this !), tried numerous settings in the driver etc etc. Nothing helps. The same cable/driver/network card works great with my 5 year old DLINK router.

Google this router, you will see that there are many people who have the same problem. Certainly problems with that firmware is very unstable. Would discourage anyone from purchasing this product.

Have put tons of hours trying to get something to work, but gives up and tosses out the crap.

You might try disabling all the power savings related function on the Windows adapter....they'll have names like 'Green Ethernet' or 'Energy Efficient Ethernet'.

Hmm... how do I "disable all the power savings related function on the Windows adapter." and are there any "risks" ?

Is is related to the network adapters ?
Under Device Manager & "ipconfig/ all" , I find the following network adapter :
* Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet - for Ethernet adapter Ethernet
* Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Wireless Network Adapter - for Wireless LAN adapter WI-FI

I have an Acer V5.561G (purchased this summer).
As I've mentioned, everything worked OK with my old D-LINK (however the power cable went dead....again !, so I decided to upgrade to RT-AC68U)

I just re-read this thread and didn't see that you had reset your ISP's connections info, so let's try that first. The ISP actually remembers what equipment is connected to the modem and that needs to be cleared when substituting a new router.

So....remove power from your modem for 30 minutes and unplug the modem WAN to router ethernet cable. Power up the modem and wait for it to sync, then reconnect the router. Also, make sure you are using at least a Cat5e cable for the modem to router connection (your old DLink may have only been a 100 Mb/s connect with a lower spec'd cable).

I have pulled the power to my ISP modem once (waited ~15 minutes) and reset the router, but can't remember if I disconnected the WAN contact... I will try once more, when I'm back. All cables are Cat6 / Cat5e and testet OK.

Strange though , having nice upload speed on LAN, but almost no download speed (and therefore no wireless network either I guess). I suspect the router is OK (due to the upload speed test), and that there is something wrong with my setup for RT-AC68U (either on my computer or in the router)

Firstly: Never make changes to Windows settings or service accounts if you do not understand what you are modifying or disabling. Those applications and scripts that modify the Windows default values are not a "one size fits all" and should be reviewed in detail before and after applying.

Secondly: Can you give us more information about your hardware? Specifically the network adapter/card hardware and if you modified any of the "advanced" settings for the network adapter in Windows.

Lastly: Is your ISP DSL, Cable, or? What speeds are you expecting or are they providing?

1. Windows settings : The changes to windows setting was done in order to try to protect myself better (based on recommendations on http://www.eightforums.com/). I'm not 100% sure of all the Viper settings , but most of them seemed to make sense. I had no network (wired / wireless) with these settings and my old router D-lin, but I thought I should mention it, since I'm not 100% certain ...

2. Hardware
I have an Aspire V5-561G

Under Device Manager & "ipconfig/ all" , I find the following network adapter :
* Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet
* Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Wireless Network Adapter
No modifications done. See attached "ipconfig/ all"

Not sure what card hardware you refer to.. (and where to find it..)
- ACPIx64 -based PC (driver date 21/06/2006)
- Intel(R) 8 Series SATA AHCI Controller - 9C03
- i5-4200CPU (driver date 21/04/2009)

3) Fiber
I have fiber / cable that enters my house to a modem. The specified speed of 35 Mbit up/down. Connecting my modem directly to my PC , I get 35 up/down.

4) Status
Connecting the modem to my AC68U (WLAN) and cat5e LAN to the PC, I get almost no speed at all < 0.5 MBit --> connection expired (during speed test. Earlier I get an OK upspeed, however now a get the message "connection expired" before the download speed is finished.
I have done no changes to the default setup of the router (except tried different Channel /Bandwidth, based on recommendations on this net)

I have disconnected the ISP modem for over 30 min, reset the AC68U once more , no change

I think something might be wrong with your router...

Something is definitely not right. Even at the default settings, your speeds should NOT be that slow. Out of the box performance is acceptable. Especially even if you've updated the firmware.

No problems here... I LOVE my router.

Should have stated : "I had no problems with my network (wired / wireless) with these settings using my old D-link router D-link", ...

Testing all night yesterday, I wasn't able to get any upload speed at all . During the download speed : it startet at 1.5MBit, whent down below 1, then below 0.5 and then just froze "connection expired....."

SAVE YOUR SYSTEM STATE!

1- Update network adapter driver with ...287 version - http://bit.ly/1CTGKXu
2- Go to My Computer >Manage > Device Manager > Network adapters > Right Click on Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222, click properties, click power management tab, and here the box should be unmarked.
3- Right click on your desktop. Choose Personalize, select Screen saver, click on " Change Power Settings" . Click on "Change plan settings " and click on " Change advanced power settings " and find there "wireless network adapter settings" and drop down power saving mode menu. Please choose for both "High Performance"

SOLVED

It was the modem of my ISP vendor ....
Apparently both my old router & ISP modem went "out of service" at the same time ...., however it took a lot of testing from me to convince the ISP vendor that something was wrong with the modem, due to the fact that I got a good signal when not connecting it to a wireless router/switch .....

Thanks for all the feedback --- it was very useful in order to find the root cause... :)

Hello!
Configured RT-AC66U_B1 WAN via USB in Android phone mode. Connected phone-Internet appeared, but channel is asymmetrical: download: 0.4-1 mbps, upload 50-60 mbps. If phone directly connected to the PC - on tests goes download: 80 mbps, upload 50 mbps... Where to dig?

No idea! But I wonder if router WiFi messes with the cellular connection when the phone is up close...
