[Solved] Help with openvpn client setup

Hi, I've updated my Asus RT-N66U to 3.0.0.4.372.31 (Merlin build) and tried to set it up as an openvpn client, but ran into some problems.

My VPN provider has a settings overview for DD-WRT: https://www.mullvad.net/en/dd-wrt.html
After copying the content of my keys I tried duplicating the settings as best I could, but got the following error:

rc_service: httpd 317:notify_rc start_vpnclient1
openvpn[526]: Options error: No client-side authentication method is specified. You must use either --cert/--key, --pkcs12, or --auth-user-pass
openvpn[526]: Use --help for more information.

I've tried changing many different settings, but keep getting new error messages. I've included a screen dump of my current settings which give the error above.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Make sure you did paste all three cert/keys on the Client1 page under OpenVPN Key (select Client 1 at the top of that page).

I have a similar problem

Cool that you did that. I didn't even think that I could use anything but DD-WRT to use mullvad on a router.
My VPN Provider, Mullvad, is the same as Brukernavn's. My router is similar. It's an Asus RT-AC56u, except my router IS flashed with DD-WRT, and so I've followed the image at https://www.mullvad.net/en/dd-wrt.html exactly but it still is not working. (Except, my Tunnel MTU setting is 1400 which is the defualt, whereas the mullvad image says the Tunnel MTU setting is 1500 and that 1500 is the default Tunnel MTU setting.) (Also on mine there are two extra fields to paste text in. They are above the CA Cert field. One is "Static Key", and the other is "PKCS12 Key")

There must be more to things to do to get, but I can't figure it out. What other settings might need changed? What other requirements are there? This is my first time. Thanks in advance.

the MTU difference won't keep you from connecting.

can you paste some logs so that we can see what's happening while it tries to connect?

Thanks so much for the quick reply i forgot to subscribe to this thread.
To get you the logs, i went to Services tab, then Services subtab and enabled syslogd. There is a field there to enter some remote ip address i guess, but i want to view the logs in the simplest way. Then i went to the Security tab, then Firewall subtab, then scrolled down to Log Management and enabled Log and set the Log Level to High. I Enabled the three options: 'Dropped', 'Rejected', and 'Accepted'. There are two buttons under there for: 'Incoming Log' and 'Ougoing Log'. Finally I go to Status tab, then the OpenVPN subtab and there is no Log there to read. it has 3 fields. 'State' field reads like this,
Server: : Local Address: Remote Address: Client: : Local Address: Remote Address:
the middle field, the 'Status' field is blank.
the last field 'Log' read like this: Serverlog Clientlog
Do i hit one of those incoming log outgoing log buttons from under the security/firewall tabs? Please and Thanks again.

no, those are not the logs I'm talking about.

but, I think you'll have better luck in this forum and with your router if you actually put merlin firmware on your router. :)

Thanks comoxl - i took your advice and put the merlin firmware 376.47 on my rt-ac56u. i have set up my wireless internet and also i went to the VPN tab, then to the OpenVPN Client Subtab and tried to duplicate the settings at https://mullvad.net/en/setup/ddwrt/ i have it like Brukernavn had in his picture he uploaded earlier. (except my screen has an upload button near the top where i can 'import an ovpn file'.)
I pasted my ca cert client cert and client key in a window that popped up after i clicked a link undef vpn tab. Then openvpn client subtab , then near authorization mode line. Then i turned on the service state. And the vpn status subtab says openvpn client 1 is Running. The network tab says im connected and i can access wireless , However, i cant load any pages, they just load forever and ever. I can still access merlin gui to turn off vpn service state switch but i just used cellular network to type for help rather than turn off vpn Service state.

go look in the system log for any errors from openvpn.

solved

i used a pic of some settings by SmallNetBuilder user ' JohnDrake ' found on another thread here. Brukernavn's pic was not working. Also, out of the three port choices for mulled, 1194, 443, and 53. i had to use the one that worked. thanks y'all

Only problem now is if i quit using internet for any extended amount of time. I lose connection and have to reboot the router to reconnect. Also, I am lagging more than usual on ps3 cod multiplayer online. Any help there is appreciated.
