New Around Here
I am very new to the nas world. I am looking for a nas that can do these things

1- can be accessed by friends and they can upload and download to
2- can restrict there access
3-can upload movies to ipad while i am on the road.
4 wanting to spend around 100-150 dollars

Speed isn't a major concern,
Thanks for the help

If your $100-$150 budget includes the HDD as opposed to a diskless unit, then you may well be out of luck at this point. The prices on HDDs have gone up by 50%-100% or more, with the floods in Thailand damaging factories that make about 1/3 of the HDDs for the world. A 2tb unit that was $80 is now more like $150.

If you have a HDD you can use for this, then a single bay NAS from synology like the DS110j may work for you. I think similar models from QNAP or Netgear have similar features, though people seem to think that Synology's user interface is the best currently.

You are asking for some reasonably sophisticated features with a very small budget. So you may have trouble finding exactly what you want in this kind of a price range.

If speed isn't a major concern, then the "cloud" NASes might work nicely for you.
Look at the Pogoplugs that are also reviews over on SmallCloudBuilder.

That is an option but i would it rather be seperate from my computer, like the iomega, so when i am out of town i could just leave the nas running and i can back up my desktop to it.

And how slow would it be say to download a 2gig file over the internet(ballpark figure)
And are there anyone one of these you would recommend?

All of these products run independently of your computer.

Device speed doesn't matter since your internet connection will be the limiting factor.
