Home network speed issues

Hi folks,

We've just had FTTC locally so I now have BT Infinity which is giving me 26mb download on my home hub 4 versus 1.3mb last week pre-FTTC. Great news. Until I looked at the speed of my network at all the access points I have installed.

I have an old house with very thick walls so I have used Comtrend powerline adaptors to create wi-fi access points in various rooms of the house. If I plug one of the APs into my home hub, I get 26mb. If I plug the same AP into one of the powerline adaptors, I get 2.6mb, so a 90% reduction.

What I don't know is whether this is due to the electric cabling in the house or whether my aged Comtrends aren't up to the job. Can anyone help me diagnose as I don't know where to go with this one? Feels like I may need to run ethernet cabling to the various rooms!

I strongly suggest you take a look at Plastic Optical Fiber to extend your WiFi AP. You will have 1 Gbps without the trouble to lay down Cat5e/6 copper all over your home.... You may check at www.casacom.ch for commercial equipment

If you wish to test the comtrend adapters just put a pair of them on the same leg of a power strip.
Then go out from the Router into one adapter and then out from the second to your computer.

If you still get the same 2.6mb then yeah . . . the adapters are just plain bad.

If you get a much higher throughput tested then you can start pointing fingers at other parts of your setup.

I am not versed at all in the regulations outside of the United States so you may need to have a certified electrician install CAT5e/CAT6 cables in wall for you.
The codes may be different for surface mounting them (stapled over a trim/baseboard molding).
Do check up on it before you do anything illegal.

As for the PON fiber . . .
AFAIK no company makes a switch and the SFP modules are not widely available through distribution.
For point to point applications as in an extension to an access point though the technology is sound.

My mistake then.
I was not aware that POF hardware such as switches and SFP modules became commercially available.
Last I checked they were demo units and not being sold at retail.
