How can I... (and with what!)?

New Around Here
I'm looking for a something (probably some NAS) that:

  • Works well with Windows and Mac OSX
  • With which I can share folders on my home network as well as on the internet. I must be able to use these folders just like the local folders on the computer i'm using. (open word processor, open file, edit, save file). Must be a bit secure doing that...
  • Can run some kind of versioning system (SVN or other?) for text files
  • Easily share photo's over the web with friends
  • Can run a Apache/PHP/MYSQL combination (just for test purposes)

Especially the first two points: 'shared folders' (what technologies can do this? .. How..) and some kind of versioning system over the web... I'm not sure what products can do this...

Anybody suggestions on both best technologies and best products to use for this?

I don't need a LOT of space, surely 4 drives or less (even one might do fine).

Greatly appreciated!!

I don't know of any NASes that do file versioning natively.

But for LAMP serving, you're looking at QNAP and Synology mainly, which will also provide root access so that you can install other Linux modules.

Folder-sharing and VPN

Thanks!

Browsing the internet it seems to me that installing a versioning system on Synology or QNAP must be a possibility. Not standard indeed.

Question remaining is the 'sharing a folder as if it were a local folder or drive', both on the local network and on internet. I know of WebDav (QNAP has this natively if I understand correctly), but are there any other possibilities of doing this? Does Synology have some technology that can do this?

Mount a folder over the internet (NFS, Samba, WebDav...)

Thanks. I studied Synology File Station a bit. It is a file explorer in a browser if I'm not mistaken.

What I am looking for is a way to mount a folder. It appears and can be used just as a local folder. This seems OK on the LAN, with Shared folders, NFS and/or Samba. However, I want to mount a folder even when I'm 'somewhere else' using my laptop. How can I do this on a Synology? Is WebDav on a QNAP THE way to do it on this NAS (or is it no good)?

Greetings,
George
