I tend to stick to one firmware that I know works well in regards to stability and performance. My old N66 is still up and running with the 35-4 firmware, which is quite old. I use it because it is the last release by Merlin and Asus that uses older wireless drivers that are really stable.
For my AC1900P though, I'm just waiting to see if there are any major fixes to the firmware that would warrant an upgrade. Even then, I wouldn't upgrade right away, as fixes for that firmware release would also be pushed down the pipe. Right now she's running 64-2. So I'll wait to see what the last version of 65 is before I upgrade.
