How to have high speed AC ?

Hi !

When I copy a file from my Synology NAS to my Macbook late 2013 (wi-fi AC) via a 5 GHz wi-fi, I am stuck to 337 Mbits/s. I know I will be far from the theorical 1300 Mbits/s, but which parameter I have to look to optimize my connection? Because it seems more like a wi-fi N connection now. ^^

My test transfer was directly from a shared directory on my laptop.

I'd be surprised if your MAC supported 1300 Mbps (3x3). Most laptops are limited to 2x2, which means a max link rate of 866 Mbps. 337 Mbits of throughput would be perfectly normal for a 866 Mbps link rate. Your bottleneck is your laptop's wireless interface, not the router or the configuration.

I'm interested to learn how to check what antenna my laptop has. I've got a late 2013 Macbook Air.

Also how are you checking transfer speed on Mac? the file copy progress window doesn't have transfer speeds.

Two antennas on the Air, three on the Pro.

To be sure of the global transfer speed, I count the time with my watch (not sure how to said that in english ^^), with a chronometer. And this is the result of my little calculation.

I tried with at least 1,5 GB files.

file size (MB) x 8 (Mbits) / total transfering time (seconds)

Probably bad phrasing on my part.

I meant under Wireless - then under 5ghz, where it says "channel bandwidth", set it to 40mhz.

Could try also setting the "wireless mode" to "N only" if that works for you.

Lastly, did you do a site survey? i.e. - see what 5ghz channels other people around you are using? It's unlikely that 5ghz is crowded where you are, but it's worth a check. Easiest way is to download "Wifi Analyzer" to your smartphone to check.

I tried, and with a 2,7 GB file it take 40 seconds, so 553 Mbps. Now it's better ! Thank you !

It was already set to 40 MHz. I switch it to 80 MHz, and it's better. 553 Mbps with a large file (2,7 GB).

I don't want the N wifi, only the AC wifi.

Yes, I already use Wifi analyzer.
