My router is an Asus RT-AC56U using the current Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. My only wireless device is 2.4GHz only and is close to the router.

Changing Tx power adjustment to 1% does nothing.

What is the custom code to change the 2.4GHz band to 10% and to change the 5GHz band to 0% (or off)?

And where do I enter the custom code?

Thanks!

I dont think transmit power can be changed in the new builds except form the slider that may or may not do much of anything. You can disable the 5 ghz band if you dont need it.

Go into the UI and under wireless then professional tab select 5ghz then disable radio hit apply and 5 Ghz goes offline. You will also see the 5 Ghz led will go out.

@HammerTime : What is the firmware version?

Assuming that you are using AsusWRT-Merlin, did you check the changelog to see if there has been a fix?

If this is truly a bug, maybe someone can comment on the process to submit the bug to the backlog.

If you are adventurous: looking at the NVRAM variables to research if or more variables can be configured. From the command line:

nvram show

Adjusting transmit power via the UI has been wonky for many people for a long time. If i recall correctly someone said once after you adjust the power level you need to reboot the router for the changes to take affect. Maybe worth a try..

For Asus and RMerlin firmware, changing the power level slider is only a 'suggestion' to the router. It will still do what it wants and thinks it should.

Yep, and if OP really needs to pull the power down, getting a 3dB Reverse SMA pad is an option - DC to 6GHz annentuators are about 5 bucks each - need to ensure that they're reverse SMA, and one will need 3 of them (one for each antenna)

I recommend rebooting the router after changing the output power.

Also keep in mind that the power isn't really set in increments of 1%. Power output is actually configurable in steps of a few percents. For instance you cannot really get only 1% - it will merely lower to the smallest power output step available.

Don't routers already reduce the power automatically to the value needed for good throughput?

It's complicated. There's a lot of things done automatically indeed, at the driver level. But how this interacts with the user-selected output level, only some with access to the Broadcom SDK would know.
