How to select a NAS Drive for Home Use?

Also... for Iomega, I am getting a 20% discount off from their website. So, a $599 2TB listed price would end up $560 (ship free).

Is there a key set of advantages of SATA II vs SATA drive? And does it make sense to use SATA II drives for the home NAS?

Also on these NAS boxes like Synology and ReadyNAS can a consumer upgrade the RAM memory? How do we know the maximum RAM the system will support?

All modern 3.5" SATA disks are SATA II compliant. Use disks from the manufacturers approved compatibility list.

You can upgrade the Readynas RAM without fear of negating your warranty. Just make sure you use compatible RAM (check the list on Readynas.com). Only some Synology boxes have a RAM DIMM. Some are hard soldered. Synology does not permit RAM upgrades, so your warranty will be void if you remove the security decal.

20% off $599 would be about $480. What's up with the $560 they're charging you?

My bad. Their online price is $699. So, 20% discout would end up $560. So I guess is this worth getting over the ReadyNAS NVX or NV+
