How to setup my own internal domain names with ports numbers?

I have a GT-AX6000.

Is there any way to setup my own internal domain names, that I can type in a key word in my browser, and it will connect to a specific server with a certain port?

My network uses MacOS, Windows and Linux among other platforms.

host/domain names are associated with IP addresses not port numbers. To redirect a client to a different port you would need to use a proxy server. For example, nginx.

That's possible if you're using Merlin's firmware rather than stock firmware.

Thanks for the info. I'm still on stock right now. Do you happen to have a link or other info on how to do this with Merlin? Is it worth installing over stock? I may have to schedule some downtime for "maintenance" but don't know when.

Merlin's firmware is just a prerequisite to being able to install and run custom software. You would then have to install Entware and the nginx package. More than that I can't really say as it's not something I've personally tried to do. But if you search the forums for "nginx" you might find some information about it.

Is using NGINX the only way to do what I want?
The only way I can think of that would redirect a browser URL to a different port would be by using a proxy server of some sort. ngnix is just one example but there are others.

If you didn't want to change the port but just associate a "friendly" host name with an IP address that's fairly easy to do without installing any additional software.

Do you happen to have instructions on how to do so?

In Merlin's firmware you could use the "Host Name" option on the LAN - DHCP Server > Manually Assigned IP... page. I don't know whether that field is present in stock firmware.

I set the host name on my Windows and Linux machines to what I want, no need to have the router manage those. Don't know how to set the name for the stinkin' Android devices.

You can create your own internal domain via the LAN page, if you still need that:

@ColinTaylor is there a way on stock firmware to associate a subdomain to an IP address, like svc1.proxbox.mysuper.lan would point to the same address as proxbox.mysuper.lan?
