How to show device name instead of IP address?

YsterVuis

New Around Here
I've tried to google on how to do this, but here's my problem:

On the official site for Asuswrt Merlin, I saw the following screenshot:

IPTraffic_Stats.png
.

You'll notice that each device has a proper name. Mine looks like this:

How do I get meaningful names to each device?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Click on Advanced Filter Options, and enable it.

I tried that, and made no difference.

Switching it off makes it look like this:

I have manually added a list of all device MAC addresses to my DHCP server and entered the names manually. Don't know if that makes a difference?

Is the DHCP server running on the router? That's the only way the router will be able to associate IPs with hostnames.

Yes, this router is the DHCP server. Do you want a screenshot of the table? I'm probably doing something stupid somewhere.

What shows up if you go to System Log -> DHCP?

Check in your browser console if there's any Javascript error when accessing the IPTraffic page. I can't think of any reason for it to fail unless something is interfering with the code (could be a browser add-in or a security software, for instance).

I don't see any errors in the Chrome console. Also opened it in IE and it's the same.

Thanks anyhow! It is just a nice-to-have, not an essential.

One thing I notice is you are on a subnet larger than a /24. I wonder if that might not cause a problem, though I'd expect the issue to be more serious than just the lack of name resolution (IPTraffic must generate a table large enough to contain the entire subnet, and Asus's own networkmap is harcoded to a /24).

Yeah, my OCD'ness wanted me to use the 3rd octet to categorise the type of device. (0 = router, switches and printer, 1 = my stuff, 2 = wife's stuff, 3 = entertainment stuff, 4 = security stuff). Changing it would take a bit of work, so will try it later and provide feedback. Thank you for all the help!

I changed the network mask to 24-bit, and now it's working!

The networkmap daemon is in need a complete rewrite IMHO. I patched a lot of bugs in it over the years (and Asus patched some more as well, in addition to pulling my patches), but the design is just plain wrong in various places, like how it hardcodes a /24 . That daemon was written like 8 years ago by people who didn't seem to care much about coding practices. The number of buffer overruns alone I had to fix was mind boggling.
