I've been lurking in the background reading and reading. I've been waiting for a NAS or home server solution that will let me backup computers on my home wireless network, share pictures and music and general provide some sharing and security.

I'm solid on computers and software and am comfortable building and maintaining. Having said that I just finished looking at some information and preliminary reports on the new HP ex487 due out in February.

Anyone here who has any knowledge? On the surface it looks interesting. I don't expect to do any streaming of movies but I might well store some. My printer is a color laser which already has a place on the wireless network so I don't need print server services.

Appreciate any feedback, comments and suggestions. Looking forward to a review here by our host.:D

Welcome Battledad.
HP hasn't sent an ex487 yet, so I don't have any first-hand info. There is a good review here, but without performance data.

If your clients are connected via wireless, you may not need to worry too much about NAS performance, since the wireless connection will probably be the limit, even if you are running draft 11n.

Just transfer a big folder between a wired and wireless client, then transfer it again with both clients wired (make sure you delete it first and empty trash so you don't get any cache effects). The throughput hit gets even worse if both clients are wireless since the single radio in the AP/wireless router has to receive and transmit, cutting client-to-client effective transfer rate in half.

Thanks for the feedback

I recently switched to the D-Link Draft N wireless router from an older pre-N Belkin. I'm running a mix of G and N adapters on the various machines. Most of my backup would be scheduled for late at night/early morning when the network is idle.

The read the review you provided the link for. I'll keep an eye out for more information but the ex487 sounds like it could be a reasonable choice for my situation.
