New to the forums and have been reading a lot of the Asus routers (Rt-N66u and RT-AC66u and AC68u) and which ones to buy. Or Nighthawk Ac1900.
I'm currently running a e3200 router on tomato and am running into a ton of issues, specifically in my 1400sq ft rancher, and wifi connections. 15ft away and I can barely get 10Mb running speedtest.net on a 50/15 connection. When I'm 5ft from the router, that's when I can finally get a decent speed 30Mb. The 5Ghz band is non-existent on the router, so i'd like to buck up some money and get something with good range, and where I can run PIA hard coded to one port (for my amazon fire tv) which I heard is better on the AC66u for CPU requirements.
Requirements:
- Run one port for AFTV dedicated to PIA
- Strong Wifi in entire house 1400sq ft and out on deck
- Stable (dont feel like rebooting the router tons)
Network has:
- 2 ipads
- 2 iphones
- 2 laptops
- Amazon Fire Tv (wired)
- LG NAS
- No "AC" devices at this time.
My questions are ... for both models ...
1 - I've heard the stock firmware is better than what Asus has been releasing. Is that still the case?
1b) Should I bother upgrading to a merlin build or asus's newer build when speeds are known to be better for out of the box routers?
2 - Are people still experiencing devices dropping off the network with certain builds? There seem to be a lot of Amazon reviews of people having that issue. Not sure what build they're on, but that's the last thing I need (or want to hear about from the wife!)
3 - Lastly...which would would suit my needs better for my setup? N66u VS. Ac66u ?
Thanks. Tom.
