Hi,

Im trying to install Java onto my ASUS RT-AC88U router. Running the latest Asuswrt-Merlin firmware.

The CPU is a Broadcom Processor based on ARM architecture. So I have tried downloading the "Linux ARM 64 Hard Float ABI" file from Oracle website but have had no luck installing unfortunately.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to working please - Am I using the right files? Is it even possible?

Many Thanks.

You are using the wrong file, it's an ARM Cortex A9 Dual Core 32Bits not Hard Float ABI.

You are welcome, Linux ARM 32 Soft Float ABI.

What you need java installed on router?

sent from Kodi 17 Krypton

It'll run Java, but keep in mind that resources can get tight, and performance can suffer as a result..

Ok thanks. I cant actually try now but will do soon... :)

Ah right. It does have a dual core processor and 512MB of RAM! Currently it only gets to a maximum of 15% CPU usage with several devices connected and streaming/downloading.

My idea was to install an app called 'JDownloader' (basically a download manager) and run it on the router and download files to a connected SSD to save leaving my computer on overnight. Ive checked with the maker of the app (great guy) and he said it is possible as long as I can install Java. It would have to unzip files, but hopefully that wouldnt stress the router out too much would it?

Thanks.

You can also try similar apps that don't require JAVA, even the router having extra RAM Java does require quite resources.

Well - the target platforms for JDownloader are typically x86 (or AMD64), which will usually have more resources available than a Dual Core ARMv7 Cortex-A9 chip with 256MB of RAM...

It's 512MB...

Isn't there a download manager available from the USB Applications page of the router?

There is indeed, thanks. But JDownloader is better for what I need.

I'll give it a try - I think the maker of the app was curious too - if the usage is too high then I won't use it anymore. I'll post my findings... :)

The router should have the potential to run it, but in the meantime create some swap file just in case.

Java 8 is already available through Optware-NG, read point 4 from here https://www.hqt.ro/bubbleupnp-server-through-optware

Ok, still likely not enough - Java is well known for eating up every bit of free memory and cpu cycles - and running an applet really intended for something with much more resources than a consumer router can offer...

Just because one can doesn't mean one should - better to offload this task to another machine - even something as cheap as a RaspPI (which is probably a better solution all around for something like this) or an old-netbook running linux...

Sorry for reviving this thread... I Just looked on the oracle 8 page and there doesnt seem to be a soft flost version around anymore?
I want to run a ha bridge on my router, so prolly a lightweight thing instead of a massive downloader.
