I pulled out an old Intel S5000psl motherboard to play around with FreeNas and noticed that the memory runs very hot - too hot to touch. Is this normal for this MB?

This is a server board, correct? I am fairly certain that all server products require a high air flow rate to keep within spec's.

Is the system being used open air? Or is this with a closed case and high speed fans?

Yes it is a server board, dual Xeon - w/8 memory slots - going to be closed box in rack. I can add fans (could be 8 total) but looking to make a RAM fan holder.

Just wanted to make sure that the RAM temperature was normal for what it is.

Don't run it open air and without high speed fans - that is what is it's 'normal'.
