Inter SSID Traffic not Routing on a RT-AX86U Pro

dickeypjeep

New Around Here
I have a RT-AX86U Pro, and I have two separate SSIDs: one on 5GHz, one on 2.4GHz. I had to do this because of a sprinkler controller (Rachio) that doesn't work well with the shared 5/2.4 SSID configuration.

The problem I'm having is that hosts on the 2.4G SSID can't talk to hosts on the 5GHz SSID. My DNS server is a wireless pi-hole, and anything on the 2.4 GHz can't use it for DNS resolution. I've done some troubleshooting and it appears that there's no layer 2 traffic at all between the SSIDs (arps don't resolve.)

Anything going onto the ethernet/wire is fine (except it doesn't get DNS resolution locally, but its fine if I point to a public DNS).

I can't seem to find a setting to enable this traffic or figure out if its even possible. I would think it is since wired hosts can get to hosts on the wireless, but maybe this router just can't go wireless to wireless? I'm stumped!

TIA for any suggestions.

What firmware are you running on the router?
Are the WiFi clients on Guest Network (or Guest Network Pro) or the main WiFi?

Which firmware?
Per chance did you set up the 2.4 GHz SSID on a guest network?

A work around for your sprinkler is to use the Dual Band SmartConnect with the same SSID for the 2.4 and 5 GHz then set up a different SSID on a guest network on 2.4 GHz for the sprinkler.

Is there an echo here???

Thanks for that link. I swear I searched for this! I just didn't search the right way. Looks like there's a hardware bug with this router.... dang. <edited as I may be mistaken>

Thanks for the suggestions on using the guest wifi for the 2.4Ghz!! That's simple and brilliant. I'll do that for the sprinkler controller and go back to the merged SSID for everything else.

I just upgraded to the latest 3.0.0.6.102_34336 code, and it works after a reboot. I'm guessing it will fail here in a day or so like so many other folks have had.

Do you happen to know if this issue with the 2.4ghz and 5ghz not communicating with each other is present on the AX88U Pro? From the thread you linked it appears to be mostly the AX86U Pro for some reason? I have my eyes on the AX88U Pro so hopefully it's not having this issue?

On a RT-AX86U Pro running 3.0.0.6.102_34336 main LAN WiFi clients on the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz network can ping each other without issue. Edit to add: Smart Connect is off so each WiFi band has it's own unique SSID name.

Do you know if it was a fix in that version of code? That's great if so. I'm on that version now, so I'll keep the config as-is and see if it works longer term. If not, I'll adopt the guest wifi for the IOT stuff.

(I edited my above post as that was presumptuous of me to assume. )

Do not have an issue with main LAN WiFi clients being unable to ping (or being unable to access a wireless Raspberry Pi running Pi-Hole) on the earlier 3004 stock Asus firmware and with the 3006 stock Asus firmware. Works fine without issue. No issues using various Asus Merlin firmware either on the RT-AX86U Pro. Its hard to say why some have issues and others don't. Could come down to how things are configured. Using the 3006.x firmware's Guest Network Pro (WiFi) can be tricky with things not working depending on the configuration. Guest Network Pro doesn't behave as one would expect some times.

Just did a quick reconfiguration of a Pi-Zero W running Pi-Hole + Unbound to put it back on the RT-AX86U Pro's main LAN 2.4Ghz WiFi from wired ethernet and it works fine. Wireless 5Ghz clients can access it on the 2.4Ghz band without issue both with DNS requests and via the Pi-Hole GUI.

Sorry, I personally have never seen this issue on any router. No idea if specific firmware, configuration or user mistake is causing it.
