hello,

Would ceiling mounting an ac87u be much better than just wall mounting?

This is for a one story house, so want signal to spread horizontally, not interested in signal spreading vertically.

With wall mounting the antennas are near the wall and the ceiling.

With ceiling mounting I can point the antennas downward and therefore the antennas are not being blocked by anything.

First wave propagation is dependent to V or H polarization. On theory vertical antenna wave is vertically polarized but it'd contain some H component to. I'd select a central location, hang the router upside down.
at least about foot off the ceiling. Here I am wondering about cooling of the router.

Cool, okay, so you are saying ceiling mounting is better than wall mounting for greatest horizontal one floor coverage.

You also suggest hang from ceiling, one foot from ceiling.

How do I do that?

Any suggestions?

As professor I assume you could invent something nice ;)
In the first place I would suggest to purchase a router or access-point that is meant for ceiling mount, an upside down RT-AC87U is not the nicest decoration.
Otherwise you shall fabricate a sort of cage construction or use two U shaped brackets, a bit like this.

I doubt that you would notice much difference. In both cases the radio signal still has to pass through walls to reach other rooms. The walls have plumbing, wiring, and in some cases steel "2x4s" or even expanded metal substrate for plaster.
