Indeed there are just a few makers of these wireless chipsets yet a look at the SNB performance charts shows quite a spread of performance. For example the D-link 825 and WNDR 3700 have same wireless component but different performance results in testing, which for me suggests that the engineering and firmware tweaks do make a difference, much like many car manufactureres share put the same basic engine in different cars - but get different results.
This is probably good fodder for a review by SNB actually: "cheap N-routers that give you the best bang for the buck as converted APs".
