So I have just bought a RT-AC66U , upgraded to latest ASUS firmware and connected it to my Billion 7800N Router..

Have a Macbook Pro Retina.. This is what I did

1) On Billion 7800N I setup full bridge mode / Disabled DHCP Server / Disabled WLAN.. It has an IP of 192.168.1.254

2) Plugged a wire from Port 1 of Billion to WAN port of ASUS.. Then used a cable to configure..

It sets up a PPPoE and I put in username / password... Then Setup different SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.. It changes its IP to 192.168.2.X .. So I make the Router IP 192.168.2.254

Now.. Issues is

When connected to 2.4Ghz Wifi.. everything looks good (Speed download from NAS 16MB/s and to internet 1MB/s which is what my usual internet speed is ) BUT

When connected to 5Ghz SSID .. I get

a) Extremely bad internet speed.. about 300-600kbps

b) Extremely bad intranet speed to my NAS connected via wire to NAS.. When I tested Apple Router I got 30MB/s .. Currently I get 1-2MB/s (even worse than 2.4Ghz

Not sure what I have setup wrong and have given up.. tried many resets of both devices.. Still does not work on 5Ghz and the default page issue

Any step by step help to configure will be great.. a n00b here

I have the same setup as you but i am running RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_372.32_beta3
and it works perfectly.

I was having the same issue too.

My suggestion would be to install RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_372.32_beta3 on the router, reset to factory defaults, then completely reconfigure the router.

(don't use any saved configs)

I bought the RT-AC66U a few months ago and to be honest its been horrible until this firmware. I was really disappointed with it (I was having the same issues you were having).

1) Where can I get that version?

2) How have you configured the IP of billion and asus? can you reach both of them?

3) Any step by step config for both router and modem will be extremely helpful.. I am so regretting buying this router at the moment..

Hope this one solves it.. I really wanted to use this router for featuers and 5Ghz.. I used Apple router and loved the speed and was expecting even more from this router..

Thanks :)

Get that version here (http://www.mediafire.com/asuswrt-merlin/)
No i have verse, so i am different than your setup.

I used to have an apple router too, its taken a few months and i am finally happy with the asus.

Now there is a new version of the driver coming out, and i am not sure if i should upgrade to it. Everything on my end is working great, and i don't want to mess with it.

After you install the new firmware make sure you reset to factory defaults as the wireless driver stores a bunch (i guess) hidden settings in nvram.

Downloading and installing.. So u have a different modem ? Verse must be the AT&T ? (Im not from US)

Will give it a try with reset.. also if u have idea how to get modem and router IP to talk , so that i can open both on window, that would be great

Uverse is ATT. I have no idea about your modem. sorry about that.

Actually just notied I am on official 3.0.0.4.374_130

Should I drop down fimrware to the merlin one??

I wouldn't bother, what i would try is do a factory reset then reconfigure the router.

I have done that 100's of times.. still same issue

Downgraded to merlin firmware.. and not the internet on 5Ghz is nearly dead.. had to force 2.4Ghz to get to this page..

Just wondering how can such a flakey router get such good ratings?

Hopefully I can fix this issue :(

Any other suggestions?? DD-WRT firmware??

I have gone back to the official 3.0.0.4.374_130

Can you post the instructions you followed to put the Billion in to full bridge mode?

If the billion was in full bridge mode, then the wizard would not change it to 192.168.2.1.

My modem is full bridge mode and it leaves the asus at the default 192.168.1.1

Something doesn't sound right with your setup.

Try testing your setup with your billion acting as a router. Change the the Asus IP address to 192.168.9.1

I have fixed that IP issue.. Basically the setup is

1) Connect to billion via cable and reset and start config..
2) Setup Internet as full bridge mode
3) Disable WLAN
4) Disable DHCP Server
5) Connect port 1 to WAN of ASUS via cable
6) Start ASUS router and configure PPPoE ..
7) Put username / password
8) Configure Wifi (different SSID for 2 channels )
9) Done

Currently ASUS has IP 192.168.1.1 and Billion has 192.168.1.254 (which I cannot reach)

I have done this 40 times now I think.. unless something is wrong

The Problem is JUST with 5GHz Wifi..

2.4GHz is working fine.. Getting download speed from my NAS at about 14-16MB/s wia 2.4GHz Wifi

Also check your MTU

Who's your ISP?

Some countries like Turkey use MTU of 1472 instead of 1492

http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=8&vw=1&articleid=386

I am in Australia..

Will test it out.. My current ping is

ping www.yahoo.com
PING ds-au-fp3.wg1.b.yahoo.com (203.84.216.121): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 203.84.216.121: icmp_seq=0 ttl=57 time=31.899 ms
64 bytes from 203.84.216.121: icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=33.773 ms
64 bytes from 203.84.216.121: icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=31.217 ms
64 bytes from 203.84.216.121: icmp_seq=3 ttl=57 time=32.921 ms
64 bytes from 203.84.216.121: icmp_seq=4 ttl=57 time=30.846 ms

Will this MTU has any issue with the traffic between my 5Ghz Wifi and NAS which is locally connected to router via Gbit Cable???

EDIT: It seems default MTU is fine for my ISP

If you're only having problems on 5 ghz, then it's probably not an MTU issue. An MTU problem would affect both wired and wireless devices.

Try Merlin firmware again, then carefully follow the troubleshooting steps in link below.

http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?p=78789#post78789

I have tried that.. Different SSID .. and using wifiexplorer on mac, i can see no one else has 5Ghz around my area..

I can give this a try again.. Just letting you know .. I had a Apple Router AC for test and it work fine.. So not sure what is going on with the ASUS one..

Try merlin once again and downgrade?

Yes, flash Merlin firmware again. Then start with step 2.

Wow.. I think I fixed my problem..

I just moved the router 1m away from billion modem (or even less - 50cm..) AND IT WORKS!!!

The ping has dropped dramatically on 5GHz

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=73 ttl=64 time=3.526 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=74 ttl=64 time=0.944 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=75 ttl=64 time=3.365 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=76 ttl=64 time=1.143 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=77 ttl=64 time=1.130 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=78 ttl=64 time=3.519 ms

Now the questions are

1) Stay at merlin or goto official ASUS latest firmware?

2) My Modem is not contacable on my router .. Billion has 192.168.1.254 and ASUS has 192.168.1.1 .. Is there a way to make them talk so that I can open billion console on browser?

3) I want to use SNMP (which i use in billion) to monitor traffic .. I know it is not installed in ASUS.. is there a way to do so ?

4) Any other thing I should be aware of?

Great.. I am glad atm.. Getting download speed from NAS at about 30-40MB/s on 5Ghz - although flakey as there is a lot of variation

Thanks all.. made me nuts!!!
