JFFS2 Partition

If you're not using jffs2 partition which I think it is, just disable it.

Would this work?

Booting my router into recovery mode and installing the latest 374.43 merlin firmware that way and wait the 40 mins it takes to get done.
Then afterwards just leave jffs2 partition disabled.

Just a random question... what is the difference in uploading firmware via firmware recovery mode and just doing it the normal way

also, is there any point in backing up my jffs2 partition at this point and please can u explain how this is done. Sorry im a noob with this jffs partition stuff. Im familiar with telnet and how to use it but the ssh thing seemed more difficult

As you indicate that you don't use the jffs for any purpose in a later post, there shouldn't be anything to backup on the jffs partition. Ergo there is nothing to restore. There is no advantage in having the jffs enabled or formatted until you need to use custom scripts.

The jffs is not required for the stock firmware or Rmerlin firmware to function correctly.

The statement that the flash memory that is used for the jffs may be "rebuilt by the system over time", is incorrect to the best of my knowledge.

"backup" is simply the act of copying the contents of your jffs partition to another one that has offline memory capability, such as a usb memory stick or hard drive. This assumes that there are custom user scripts present on the jffs partition in the first place.

The custom scripts that users add to the jffs to modify the routers behavior are not restored by any firmware install that I am aware of. I believe Rmerlin's firmware may backup what it finds in the jffs to an attached usb storage device as part of the firmware flash setup. So if the jffs is formatted after adding custom scripts to the jffs, users may want to check the root directory of their usb storage device(s) for an archive of the jffs partition that may have been put there by Rmerlin's firmware setup during the flash process.

SSH requires the client pc user to use software like Putty. Putty is better as a terminal client than the stock telnet client windows comes with. Putty is freeware.

It's the user's responsibility to keep a backup of his JFFS partition. There's no automated process in the firmware code for this.

So how does one backup the JFFS partition? I have an ASUS RT-N666U. I inherited this at my current network. I believe it has some information in the NVRAM but can't find the instructions that tell me how to back it up.

I believe simply copying the /jffs folder to wherever you want using WinSCP or similar software.

I've had to disable JFFS in order to have a mostly-working router since I recently updated.
