New Around Here
Hey guys
I just got the Asus RTN66U and I had read about this router getting hot before so I knew to expect that. The router is working great, I am getting great speeds and the connection has not dropped once yet (only had it running for about 22 hours). I have gotten trough 2 other routers (not ASUS) in the last month or 2 and had to return them due to wireless getting disconnected, slow speeds etc..
The issue with this router is that it gets hot and I just want to make sure this is normal. It is warm to the touch on top, not hot to where it would burn your hand or you would have to take it off right away but definitely hotter than any other router I've had.
The area where the ports are is hot to where if i put my fingers in the usb ports for a few seconds it does start to burn a little (i guess due to the ports being metal)
Maybe it is just me but also the area in the back where the usb ports are if i get close enough i can smell a bit of a burn or "hot" smell...not sure how to explain it, its not real strong but its there...
Is this normal with this router?
I don't see any utilities in the firmware (running stock firmware) that will show me any temperatures.
My concern is whether this would affect the longevity of the router, or will it get too hot to where i'll start having disconnects or other issues with the router. Even worse whether there'd be any safety issues...
Is there any utility i can use to check the temperature to make sure it is still within the safe range?

Thanks!

I have a new Asus N66U too , ok it is warm but if you want to monitor the temperature install Merlins firmware where you have monitoring of the temperature , I have uner 60 degress Celsius on the two bands.

Thanks, I should try that, now I had heard that you can user 3rd party software in the router ( i heard about Merlin, Tomato?, etc..)
My question is can i revert back to oem software afterwards if for whatever reason 3rd party software is unstable etc? I am guessing 3rd party software should have more features just haven't heard much about stability...

Yes you can easily revert back with no problems. I just did so myself this morning. I was on Merlin and felt like messing around so I flashed Tomato. I decided Merlin was for me so I flashed back. Very easy to do using the Asus firmware restore utility.

My previous WRT310N ran hotter than the RT-N66U/RT-AC66U. It's fairly common with high-end routers, as CPUs are getting quite faster.
