New Around Here
Hallo,

in the last time i had masiv speed problems with openVPN.

now i like to try L2TP/IPsec protokoll and i have use the search for L2TP/IPsec but i fond no solutions.

My vpn Provider give´s me the follow Connect details:

Hostname: ...
Username: Your VPN username

Password: Your VPN password

Pre shared Key: ...

i try to use the Connect details in the WebIF at PPTP/L2TP Client but it dosn´t connect.

What shall i do?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Edit:
i have 376.48_beta3 on the RT-N66U

Before you waste time trying to get this flavor of a VPN working it may not improve your throughput.

In my experience PPTP, L2TP are no faster than OpenVPN and sometimes even slower.

L2TP for what ever reason is the least supported variety of VPN.

Actually OpenVPN is quite unstable on Asus WRT.
I suggest you to use L2TP (is way faster than PPTP and waaaay more secure) and just a bit slower than OpenVPN (if you can keep the connection active - it drops continously).
I suggest you to setup L2TP on the WAN setting page instead of the VPN page (that would be a tunnel).
From your provider you would only need username+password+server IP.

ok thank you for your help.

I also noticed that openVPN in the past runs very un- stable.
my dowload speed with vpn is 10-12 Mbit abd without vpn 40 Mbit.

But i have in the past a very better speeed with openVPN up 18 Mbit.

i have try to use the Connect details for L2TP on the WAN setting but it dosn´t run.
no idea where I put the Pre shared Key.

best regards

You need to enter four pieces of information to get L2TP working:

Server
Username
Password
PSK

ok but where should I put the PSK?
Dude I don't know about your VPN provider, but every L2TP setup in Asus WRT and DD-WRT there is no need for any PSK.
Just username + password + server IP, that's it. Check it out on the WAN side, you'll just need these 3 inputs.

Your experience has been different than mine. With L2TP I have always needed to provide a PSK.

Here is the setup on my router using Tomato based firmware.

PSK
