New Around Here
I'd like to ask the NAS experts (you, tim specifically <3 since you'd most likely know), what is happening with my Lacie.

I own four of these beasts. Two 1TB ones and two 2TB ones. I have them because they're cheap for what they offer and I can't afford to get anything better/more reliable (yes I "know about" Lacie and in particular their external power supply issues - I've had to replace three by now).

There's this problem that occurs once every now and then. Like in the last 2 years, three times now. It's crazy.

Suddenly I can't access the NAS, (with any of the connection options - usb, ethernet direct to computer, ethernet through router), I can't turn it off via the normal off button, the whole thing doesn't respond. I have to unplug it to even turn if off. And then I give it a rest, plug it back in, and it straight away turns on to the same "no respond" state (which it shouldn't normally do, right?). Because it turns back on and powers up instead of the normal standby, is it some (internal) power supply issue?

In the past I have had to just leave it and then a month later, try it again and it'll just work. One time, it suddenly didn't work when bringing it between countries.

This is ridiculous since I use these disks for my data! Any insights into what is happening and what I could do to quickly restore access to my drive when this happens?

Many thanks <3. I will certainly contact lacie this time but want to pass it by this fine site first.

The only clue I can provide is that I had problems with the Ethernet Disk mini because of the way it does the USB-connection trick.

Are you trying to access via IP address or hostname? Do you have a static IP set on the unit or is it dynamic?

Also could be temperature related. Is the fan working ok?

Same Issue

I am having the exact same issue. I have a 1TB Ethernet Big Disk, I bought in 2007. I have had it on for the longest time, and accessed it regularly through ethernet connected to router. Then one time I tried accessing it and I couldnt. The NAS was not accessible through USB or Ethernet. I also cannot turn it off with the button, and since I can't access it from the computer, I cannot turn it off from the Software. The only way is to pull the Plug.

When I plug it back it, it is automatically on, but I still cannot access it. I noticed the fan doesn't seem to work either.

Oh what to do... All my data

your data (and disk drive unit) is probably okay!!!

these devices are notorious for failed power supplies. if it is under warranty LaCie will probably send you a free replacement.

get a new power supply (the external brick) and continue to use your Ethernet Big Disk!!!

Any solutions

Have you found any solution for this problem? I'm having the exact same issue.

Thanks in advance,
Tiago Vilhena

Could be a bad drive

I've been having the same issue. Just started yesterday. Unit powers on, light stays solid blue. I can hear the drives spin up and they sound normal to me (ie. there's no strange noises or clicking), but I cannot connect to the unit either through USB or Ethernet.

I would've returned it (I've had it less than 2 years) however I would most likely lose the data on it, which I'd rather not. So what I did instead was to take out the drives and mount them in an enclosure configured as individual drives rather than 1 large drive (yes I'm aware I've just voided my warranty). However my system only recognizes 1 of the drives. I'm still trying to find a solution to getting access to both.

So, if one of the drives dies then most likely the whole unit is dead, especially if it's the drive that contains the partition info (which is the case for me).

Lacie 1TB BigDisk No longer works

I've had the same issues as described above. Drive worked fine for a long time, accessed it over Ethernet. Then one day a couple months ago I couldn't see it on the network anymore. I can't access it via Ethernet or USB on any of the three PCs I've tried it with. When I plug it in, the blue power light comes on right away and stays on. I can't hear the drive spinning or the fan working. The external power supply does make a bit of noise but I'm not sure how noisy it was before. Has anyone confirmed that this issue is just a bad external power supply? I just put a trouble ticket into Lacie's online support so we'll see what they say too.

LaCie Ethernet Disk mini 500GB

I have the same problem. This is the second time this hapens. The first time it was repaired in warranty by LaCie. I'm not sure what was repaired. I presume the HD was replaced because all my data were missing.
After reloading all my data, the LaCie worked well again for some time, but now I experience the same problem again. Meanwhile the warranty is over. I wonder how Lacie will react when I give it repair again.
Has anyone received a favorable reaction of LACie after warranty. Apparently it is a hidden discrepancy.

LaCie Ethernet Big Disk

I am experiencing this problem for a second time. The first time I ultimately was advised to replace the power supply, which I did. The first time that did solve the problem.

This time I went ahead and bought another replacement power supply. But no joy.

Does anyone know of a method to remove the two drives from the Lacie enclosure and be able to mount them as the single raided drive? Otherwise the data will be lost.

Advice from Lacie this time is to ship the unit to a data recovery company. Not very helpful.
